Outdoor Space Information
Outdoor areas of Recreational Sports may be available to Registered Student Organizations or Departments of Texas Tech University. Due to extremely heavy use during the Academic Year the outdoor spaces are not available for individual events or community events. The outdoor spaces are for the students, faculty and staff of Texas Tech and are not open to outside groups for reservation or rental (This includes Texas Tech staff wanting to reserve or rent space for youth or community teams).
Further, reservations by student organizations or departments are for events that would interest and include, all, or a large portion of, the Tech community. These would include events such as; organizational membership drives, philanthropic events sponsored by a student organization, or events sponsored by an organization or department that would have wide appeal to the Tech community or facilitate the academic mission of the University.
There are a number of lighted fields and areas and plans to use lights can be worked out during the rental process. A fee may be required.
All reservations of Recreational Sports grounds must also have the event approved by the Outdoor Events Coordinating Committee (Grounds Use) of the University. A reservation with Recreational Sports only secures the right to move forward with the planning of the event. Forms and information on Grounds Use may be found on the website of Student Union and Activities. No event may be held without University approval.
Reservations will only be considered if they are not in conflict with scheduled activities of the Department of Recreational Sports.
All reservations that are approved are considered approved “weather permitting” and that conditions exist that would not cause damage to fields, play spaces or areas. Outside Rentals do not come with "Inclement Weather" accommodations.
The Division of Recreational Sports offers a number of outdoor play fields and recreation spaces. We have numerous requests for the various outdoor spaces. There are a number of restrictions on all outdoor spaces.
Urbanovsky Park Picnic Gazebos
We have 2 Gazebos to allow for Cook-Outs (Grill not provided) or just for meetings. Each Gazebo can come with other spaces (SVB, Open Play) as long as those areas are not already reserved.
A “hill amphitheatre” with a flat grass performing area at the bottom. The amphitheatre will seat up to approximately 250 people comfortably in the grass. This is the area where bands, stages, and outdoor performances are generally held.
A large field area just east of the United Spirit Arena. This area runs into the Tech Bonfire area where the homecoming bonfire is held annually. This area is typically not for reservations as its a competitive space for our Rugby Teams.
Open Fields and SVB at Urbanovsky Park
This is an open area just east of the Student Recreation Center. Generally, these fields are for “free play” for Tech Students when not in use for intramural activities. This space also includes 5 Sand Volleyball Courts and 2 Basketball Courts (1 High & 1 Low Hoop)
West Rec Softball Complex
