Advancing Science, Standards, and Systems for a Circular Textile Economy

Moving Toward a Circular Economy

The global textile industry is entering a decisive decade shaped by escalating sustainability expectations, emerging policies, and growing interest in credible, scientifically grounded approaches to reuse, repair, and recycling of textile materials. However, existing recycling and recovery systems remain limited in scale, consistency, and coordination.

Texas Tech University proposes the establishment of the Textile Circularity Institute as a multidisciplinary academic initiative intended to advance research, innovation, and engagement in textile circularity. Housed at Texas Tech University, the Institute is envisioned as an applied research and collaboration hub that connects academic research with industry, government, and community partners. The Institute will support brands, recyclers, technology developers, municipalities, and producer responsibility organizations (PROs) by providing research capabilities, analytical tools, and educational resources relevant to evolving sustainability and circularity goals.

Our Mission

The mission of the Textile Circularity Institute is to advance knowledge related to textile circularity through research, education, and outreach. The Institute seeks to support the development and evaluation of technologies, methods, and systems associated with textile reuse, repair, recycling, and material reintegration. Activities are intended to be research-driven, transparent, and consistent with Texas Tech University policies governing academic independence, research integrity, and public engagement.

Our Location

The Textile Circularity Institute would be headquartered at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Texas Tech has established strengths in fiber science, materials characterization, recycling research, environmental analysis, and applied engineering. The Institute would build upon these existing capabilities while engaging collaborators from across the university and external industry partners.
