About the Valero Experiential Learning Laboratory

The Valero Experiential Learning Laboratory stands as a cornerstone of hands-on education in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University.

A Gift that Transformed Learning

Established in 2018 through a generous $1 million gift from Valero Energy Corporation, a San Antonio-based Fortune 50 company, the facility expanded the department’s undergraduate teaching space by 65 percent. It replaced the original laboratory that had served Red Raider engineers for more than five decades, ushering in a new era of innovation, safety, and experiential learning.

A Bridge Between Theory and Practice

Designed to replicate real-world industrial environments, the Valero Lab allows students to translate classroom theory into practical application. The facility features state-of-the-art equipment—including a process control trainer, 3D printers, and systems for fluid, mass, and heat transfer—providing opportunities to explore every stage of chemical and process engineering.

Students gain hands-on experience operating bench scale and stand alone systems, analyzing data, and troubleshooting complex engineering challenges under realistic conditions. This immersive approach builds the confidence and technical expertise employers seek in the energy, materials, and bioprocessing industries.

Integration with the Morrow Energy Pilot Plant

The Valero Lab houses the control room for the Morrow Energy Pilot Plant, allowing students to observe and manage large-scale operations while learning how data-driven control systems influence safety and efficiency. This integration strengthens the connection between academic instruction and the operational realities of modern engineering.

Supporting Education and Outreach

The facility serves as the primary teaching space for CHE 3232 Transport Laboratory and CHE 4232 Unit Operations, while also supporting projects in courses such as CHE 3315 Fluid Mechanics and CHE 4356 Process Safety. Beyond the classroom, the lab plays a vital role in STEM outreach programs, giving K-12 students and visitors a glimpse into the problem-solving mindset that defines engineering at Texas Tech.

A Lasting Partnership

The collaboration between Texas Tech and Valero Energy Corporation reflects a shared vision—to prepare future engineers who will drive innovation in the energy and chemical sectors. By investing in world-class facilities and experiential learning, Valero and Texas Tech have created a lasting legacy that empowers students to lead, innovate, and make an impact from day one.
