RESEARCH PROJECTS
1.   TRANSFORMING IMMUNE HEALTH THROUGH SMART BLOOD FILTRATION

Our laboratory is developing advanced blood filtration technologies, including cryogel-based and microfluidic platforms (in collaboration with Dr. Wei Li, Chemical Engineering, Texas Tech University), to selectively remove disease-causing antibodies directly from whole blood. Unlike conventional therapies that broadly suppress the immune system, these approaches are designed to capture and eliminate only the harmful antibodies that contribute to food allergies or autoimmune diseases while preserving the body's normal immune defenses. Through the integration of biomaterials, bioengineering, and immunology, we aim to create safer, drug-free, and more precise treatment strategies. Ultimately, our goal is to develop next-generation therapies that restore immune balance, reduce disease burden, and improve the quality of life for individuals living with chronic immune-mediated conditions.

2. ADVANCED BIOMATERIALS FOR TISSUE REGENERATION

We are developing cryogel-based nerve guidance conduits designed to support the repair and regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves. These highly porous, flexible biomaterials provide a supportive environment for nerve cells, promote tissue integration, and facilitate the growth of new nerve fibers across injury sites. By combining biomaterials engineering with regenerative medicine approaches, we aim to create next-generation alternatives to nerve grafts that improve functional recovery and quality of life for patients suffering from traumatic nerve injuries.

3. MICRO- AND NANO-THERAPEUTICS FOR MANAGEMENT OF AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

Autoimmune diseases arise when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy tissues, leading to chronic inflammation, pain, and progressive tissue damage. Although current treatments can help manage symptoms, they often suppress the immune system broadly and may cause unwanted side effects. Our research seeks to develop smarter and more targeted solutions by engineering innovative micro- and nano-scale therapeutic technologies. By combining biomaterials, immunology, and advanced drug delivery strategies, we aim to precisely regulate harmful immune responses while preserving the body's natural defenses. Our ultimate goal is to create safer, more effective therapies that restore immune balance, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the quality of life for individuals living with autoimmune diseases.
