Departmental phone numbers are moving to Microsoft Teams March 28, 2025
Posted March 20, 2025
Audience: Skype for Business response group owners
Cc: Network site coordinators (NSCs)
As announced, the migration to Microsoft Teams is scheduled to start on Friday, March 28, 2025, at 6:30 PM CDT, continuing throughout the weekend until completion. As a current member of one or more Skype for Business response groups, you may be receiving calls placed to departmental phone numbers. When response groups are converted to Teams (branded as "call queues"), you will receive calls for all related departmental numbers unless you choose to opt out after the migration.
Departmental call routing will work the same after the migration to Teams as it does in Skype for Business, except that calls must be answered in Teams. Please note that delayed ringing, which is uncommon, is not supported. All call queue members will ring simultaneously.
How can I review my current Skype for Business response group membership?
Before migration, view your current response group membership. This interface will be permanently disabled during the migration.
How can I review my Teams call queue membership and optionally stop receiving calls?
After the migration, follow these instructions for web (recommended), Teams app on Mac or PC, or Teams mobile app to view your queue membership and sign in/out of call queues.
How will departmental calls be impacted during the migration?
Departmental phone numbers will be moved from response groups to call queues without interruption on Friday evening, March 28, from approximately 7:00–9:00 PM CDT. However, the ability for response group members to handle calls may be intermittently interrupted as their individual accounts are migrated to Teams throughout the weekend. Unanswered calls will be routed to departmental voicemail.
Some departmental numbers are served by "auto attendants" that allow callers to reach areas by number and individuals by name. Auto attendants will be migrated after response groups through approximately 11:00 PM and may be unavailable to callers for up to one hour.
If your department relies on response groups or auto attendants on weekends, you may want to plan for alternate communication methods during the migration, such as mobile phones or personal Teams audio and chat.
