Ballistics testing requires an apparatus that can launch a projectile (pellet) into a reaction chamber to measure pressure, temperature, and visual data about fragmentation and debris formation. From this data we can learn how chemical energy stored in the projectile is converted to expansive work (measured from pressure data) and isolated in the condensed phase as radiant exchange (measured from imaging pyrometry data). The High-velocity Impact-ignition Testing System (HITS) is a unique diagnostic enabling vented chamber calorimetry measurements of energy conversion of a structural reactive material.
