OLLI Book Club: “The Sentence” by Louise Erdrich
How powerful can words be? Do they have power beyond the grave? Pulitzer prize-winning author Louise Erdrich's most recent novel explores the power of words in the haunting of a small independent bookstore in Minneapolis. Set amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd riots, Flora, an American Indian wannabe, suddenly dies. But she can't stop visiting the bookstore and haunting her favorite book clerk, an ex-con named Tookie. Why is Flora so focused on Tookie? What did she know that could cause Tookie to come unglued?
Linda Oakes Walker, a graduate of McMurry University in Abilene, is a retired high school English teacher who also taught GED classes in the Texas prison system.
