Pappy Slokum's Brewery tour was an amazing trip for the OLLI at TTU, Abilene group. Located at 409 S. Treadaway in Abilene, this local business has proven to be a hidden gem. The beams around the room are covered with badges from local first responders, of whom Pappy Slokum's is a large supporter. Co-owner Jeff Bell gave the personal tour of the building and the processes they follow when making their beers.

Upon arrival, members were offered a free sampling of Pappy's home brew while Jeff told the story of how Pappy Slokum's came to be. As the walking tour began, Jeff showed members to the back of the building where all the magic happens. After marveling at the large walk-in refrigerator, OLLI members were shown the grains used in making Pappy's one-of-a kind brews. They were even encouraged to taste the grain and compare the difference between each of them. The towering silver tanks were working away, each one a different stage of the brewing process, as Jeff explained the ins and outs of beer making. Afterward Jeff answered any questions members might have had. He was an amazing host for an equally amazing class.

Jeff shared that the Pappy Slokum's brewery is the largest, by volume, in West Texas. Its beer is in select United stores within Abilene as well as local restaurants and is currently being vetted for distribution by HEB. OLLI members are anxious to do this all again as we celebrate Oktoberfest at Pappy's from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.
