By Alice Boyd, Coordinator, OLLI at Fredericksburg

The Metropolitan Opera House

The Metropolitan Opera House
OLLI at TTU, Fredericksburg members had the opportunity to learn more about the wonderful world of opera? They didn't even need to go to New York City, San Francisco, or Houston to get this information; they enjoyed it in a movie theater close to home. Instructor James Klein and OLLI members had the opportunity to learn about one of the best-known and favorite operas, Carmen by Georges Bizet. The members learned about the composer's background, how opera works, why it is so much fun, and reviewed the plot and production in preparation of seeing it "Live at the Met."

Do not worry if you missed this class. We will be holding the class "A Mature Person's Guide to the Opera: Two Pucinnis for the Price of One" on Nov. 19, in a continuation of the series of classes that introduce members to the great operas. This fall we have the opportunity to see two of Giocomo Puccini's most famous operas – Turandot and Madama Butterfly. In addition to learning about the plots and characters, this class will explore opera conventions and the verismo style of these Puccini operas. These operas will be performed by the Metropolitan Opera of New York City in its "Live at the Met" series and can be seen in local theatres this fall. You do not want to miss it!
