Faculty Mentorship Academy 2023-2024 Cohort

Faculty Mentorship Academy Seal
The TTU Office of Faculty Success is excited to open the 2023-2024 Faculty Mentorship Academy (FMA) cohort application process.

The FMA mission is to help faculty empower each other to achieve their personal and professional goals. This nine-month program matches mentees with mentors in Mentorship Circles to create a community of support and guidance on topics such as research, creative activity, professional practice, service, teaching, and well-being. This program is open to those with faculty appointments in all ranks and positions, such as lecturers, professors of practice, and tenure-track faculty.

Mentorship Circles will include 5-7 mentees matched with two mentors. After participants are selected, the composition of each circle will be determined by cohort preferences expressed through the application process. Mentees will be selected based on various factors, including participant goals, potential contributions, and time commitment. Other considerations include balancing cohorts based on markers such as home college, rank and position, duty point, number of participants, and department approval.

Mentee Commitment

  1. Meet monthly with Mentorship Circle mentors and mentees (at least six meetings).
  2. Attend a minimum of eight workshops over two long semesters offered through the Teaching, Learning, & Professional Development Center (TLPDC) related to an aspect of faculty development that meets the unique values and interests of the participant and circle members.
  3. Complete a Faculty Development Plan throughout the year to detail personal and professional short and long-term goals.
  4. Participate in pre- and post-program reflective surveys to guide the format and content of future FMA offerings.

Applications will be evaluated with the following criteria: Understanding of Mentor/Mentee Roles (20%), Specific Mentee Goals (24%), Commitment to Mentorship Program (24%), Contribution to Mentorship Circle (24%), and Thoughtful Writing & Professional Language (8%). A full rubric is available upon request.

Selected mentees who complete the program will receive a certificate of participation, recognition from the Office of Faculty Success, and ongoing membership in the Faculty Mentorship Academy. Active academy status requires faculty members to earn Mentorship Continuing Education (MCE) credits by attending relevant workshops through the TLPDC and Office of Faculty Success. After mentees participate in the FMA and achieve advancement, they may apply for consideration as a mentor.

FMA Mentorship Program History

The Faculty Mentorship Program is the result of many voices on campus advocating for the need for mentorship. The FMA does not take the place of the excellent mentoring done at the department or college level or the informal mentoring that happens around campus. Rather, the FMA provides centralized resources for our instructional community and offers a program to make sure that all have an opportunity for mentoring.

Spring 2023 Beta Program

During the one-semester beta program, 27 mentees and ten mentors participated in five mentorship circles. Participants were selected based on personal goals, potential contributions, and time commitment. Other factors considered include maintaining representation from multiple markers, including home college, rank, and affinity group interest. Beta program participants helped to shape the program's development for future cohorts.

Selected mentees and mentors participated in the following ways:

  1. Participated in four Mentorship Circle meetings, including two tenured or continuing appointment faculty mentors and up to six faculty mentees.
  2. Attended four Mentorship Continuing Education (MCE) workshops.
  3. Completed pre-and post-program quantitative and reflective surveys to help guide the format and content of future Faculty Mentorship Academy offerings.

Mentees created a Faculty Development Plan to identify yearly goals and objectives for five years across the following development categories:

  • Professional
  • Research, practice, or creative activity
  • Teaching
  • Service and engagement
  • Work/life integration
  • Individual mentorship networks

Both mentors and mentees received a Certificate of Completion and ongoing membership in the Faculty Mentorship Academy. Active status in the academy requires that faculty members participate in one MCE workshop each semester through the TLPDC and Office of Faculty Success.

After mentees acquire tenure, continuing appointment, and/or promotion, they may apply for consideration as a mentor. In addition, academy members may be invited to present workshops on topics related to mentorship, recruited to serve as mentors, or serve in advisory roles for the FMA. All mentors and mentees are eligible to reapply for future mentorship programs.
