The Institute for the Study of Western Civilization is sponsoring an essay competition for Texas Tech undergraduates whose winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. To win this scholarship, a student must have attended the lecture about Shakespeare and his Legacy, entitled “William Shakespeare and the Roots of Western Civilization” that was delivered by Professor Paul Cantor of the University of Virginia at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018 in the Matador Room of the Student Union Building. In the essay, the student must describe the ideas developed in Professor Cantor's lecture, and provide his or her own thoughts on the subject. Persuasiveness, imagination, prose quality, and independent research into the nature of the topic of Professor Cantor's lecture will all be factors in the grading of submitted essays.

  •  Students must have attended Paul Cantor's lecture and included their name and contact information on the available sign in sheet in order to qualify and participate.
