Katie Howell graduated from Texas Tech University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, Creative Writing. She also holds an associate degree in music from South Plains College. As a student, she studied vocal performance, audio engineering, music history, theory, numerous literature genres, and creative writing in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and technical writing.

Before attending college, Ms. Howell grew up in Littlefield, a small town in the Texas Panhandle. Most of her young life was spent on cotton farms, enjoying the quiet and simple country life with family. Eight years of piano lessons from her grandmother instilled an early love of writing and playing music. Ms. Howell went on to create a music album, on which a song entitled "Cotton Rows" pays tribute to her memories as a girl on the farm.
