The Future of the Theater

Terry Teachout

Wall Street Journal Critic

Mr. Teachout, the Wall Street Journal drama critic spoke on "The Future of the Theater". How does that future look in the digital age? Will new technologies revivify or supplant it? Obituaries have been written for the theater since the debut of film, has their time finally come, or are the rumors of the stage's demise still greatly exaggerated?

Mr. Teachout attended St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland; William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri; and the University Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After working as a Jazz Bassist and a composer, he moved to New York in 1985.

Mr. Teachout wrote his first play Satchmo at the Waldorf in 2011. This one-man, two-character drama, which opened to very favorable reviews, revolves around Louis Armstrong and his manager Joe Glaser.  His latest book is Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington, which was published by Gotham Books in 2013. He also writes a current blog "About last night", for the Arts Journal that highlights the Arts of New York City.

Terry Teachout's lecture was held in the Matador Room located in the Student Union Building at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, on November 4th, 2015.
