 Parent and Family Relations Hiring Student Assistants for Summer 2013

On behalf of Texas Tech Parents Association, Parent and Family Relations, a University department, seeks motivated and energetic Student Assistants for a part-time position Summer 2013 (average of 20-25 hours per week).  Anticipated employment dates are June 1st – August 9th.  Rate of Pay = $7.25/hour.

Duties include representing the Texas Tech Parents Association (TTPA) during Red Raider Orientation and registering parents for membership into TTPA.

Representation and registration duties include: setting up for and providing assistance at TTPA tables, assisting with TTPA membership questions, and interacting with parents and family members of prospective students at various functions/receptions. This position involves a high level of contact with people and strong communication skills.  While not required, students who can communicate in Spanish and sign language are encouraged to apply.

Clerical duties include: data entry, filling donation level benefit orders, and assisting in overall membership drive. Must be able to work quickly and accurately with a strong attention to detail. Excellent customer service and computer/typing skills a must.

Must be available to work throughout the week, including Sunday and weekday mornings and some evenings. Exact working schedule will be determined after all students have been hired.

 Students can take a trip or get their bikes fixed with Outdoor Pursuits

The Outdoor Pursuits Center has trips every weekend in April from 1 day hiking or mountain biking to weekend climbing, backpacking, canoeing or canyoneering. This is a great way for students to make new friends, learn new skills and explore new places. All of the information is available at Encourage your student to get outside with the OPC. P.S. The weather is great for bike riding. Many students don’t know that the OPC has tools available for students to work on their bikes for free or we will repair them for them at reasonable costs.

 From personal training to massages and swimming, the Rec Center provides great ways for your student to relax and stay fit

The Fitness/Wellness Center has a new Partner Personal Training program. It is designed for students to train with one or two friends [maximum of three people in the session] with one of our professional training staff. This gives the added social support of a friend(s) at a reduced rate. Contact the Fitness/Wellness Office for more information. Encourage your student to learn some healthy habits by training with a friend or two!

Provided by licensed massage therapists, a massage can be a great stress reliever for students. Gift certificates are available by calling 806 742-3828 for $40/hour. We will mail the gift card to you student.

The Leisure Pool is open! It’s a fun way to spend some time with friends. Please remind your students to buy new sunscreen and apply it frequently.

 Texas Tech Police Department to hold Crime Prevention Seminar on April 8th

On April 8, 2013, the Texas Tech Police Department will be holding a Crime Prevention Seminar in the City Bank Conference Center of the United Spirit Arena located on the TTU campus. The seminar will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Texas Tech Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety will be instructing classes on several safety topics. Students can attend all the classes or only the classes they want to attend.

Seminar Schedule:

8:00 am to 10:00 am - Active Shooter
10:00 am to 11:00 am - Robbery/Theft Prevention
11:00 am to 12:00 noon – Internet Safety ( The Department of Public Safety will be instructing the class)
12:00 noon to 1:00 pm – Lunch (Not Provided)
1:00 pm to 2:00 pm – Driving and Texting (Texas Department of Public Safety will be instructing the class)
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm – Personal Safety
3:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Storm Ready
4:00 pm to 5:00 pm- Alcohol Awareness

 SOAR Learning Center empowers students in pursuits of success

The SOAR Learning Center’s mission is to empower students in their pursuit towards academic success while providing an encouraging and safe learning environment. The Learning Center works to enhance the academic endeavors of all currently enrolled Texas Tech students by offering a variety of free services such as Peer & online tutoring, Academic mentoring, and Supplemental Instruction. Tutoring and Academic Mentoring is available Monday thru Thursday from 8am-8pm and Friday 8am-5pm. 

An additional resource available to students at the Learning Center is access to a licensed professional counselor with over 25 years in education. Stacy Elliot, M.Ed., LPC is a LEARNING SPECIALIST/SENIOR COUNSELOR available to work holistically with students striving to be successful in college. As a counselor, she works to help students resolve personal issues that may hinder their academic success. The Learning Specialist is available Monday through Friday 8am-5pm by appointments and accepts walk-ins.

April 1, Monday

  • No classes. University employees on duty.
  • Select dining locations open for service.

April 4, Thursday

  • 3 p.m., First day for summer/fall advance registration for currently enrolled students (continues through April 22).

April 5, Friday

  • Last day for graduate degree candidates to submit to the Graduate School the final PDF of thesis/dissertation.
  • Last day for graduate degree candidates to submit the Oral Defense and Thesis-Dissertation Approval Form.

April 19, Friday

  • Last day to remove grades of I, PR, or CR in the Graduate School. This does not apply to the PR/CR received on a previous thesis or dissertation enrollment.

April 22, Monday

  • Last day of advance registration.

April 23, Tuesday

  • Official reports due to Graduate School on Interdisciplinary Portfolio for the master’s degree (non-thesis students).
  • Official reports due to Graduate School on results of final comprehensive exams.
  • Open registration begins.
  • Last day to transfer between colleges.

 Responsible off campus living

If your sophomore Red Raider lives off campus, make sure he or she is a good neighbor. Students choosing to live in single-family houses sometimes need reminders that they are not necessarily living among other students. Families with small children and working professionals may not appreciate loud noises during late hours.

 Does your student need a budget? Red to Black can help

Red to Black assists in many areas of personal finance including budgeting, saving and investing, credit and debt management, and identity theft. We are located in the College of Human Sciences. Appointments can be made by stopping by our office in HS 154B, via email or by phone at 742-9781. In addition, walk-ins are welcome in HS 267. Our walk-in counseling hours are listed below:

Tuesday: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

 Students can purchase or rent commencement regalia beginning March 18th


The Texas Tech Bookstore at Barnes & Noble offers rental and purchase of regalia.

Prices are as follows:

  • Bachelor's Package $50.96 includes cap/tassel/gown/stole
  • Master's Package $60.96 includes cap/tassel/gown/hood

These will be available for purchase from March 18th until the day of graduation.

Regalia is available to be shipped for an additional $6.95.

Rental prices are as follows:

  • PhD. package $61.96 includes cap/tassel/gown/hood
  • Law package $97.94 includes tam/tassel/gown/hood

PhD./ Law are the only regalia available for rental.

The last day to rent without a $25.00 fee is April 13th. The last day to rent with a $25.00 fee is April 20th.
