Abhipsita Das

CV

Dr. Abhipsita Das is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Agricultural and Applied economics at Texas Tech University. She also serves as the coordinator of the Master of Agribusiness (MAB) program, with the responsibility of exploring the bridges between academia and the agribusiness industry. Prior to joining Texas Tech, Das worked as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Alabama State University. She gained experience in teaching Business Statistics and Macroeconomics. Earlier, she worked as a postdoctoral scholar and lecturer at Texas State University. In addition, Das served as a postdoctoral research scholar at Arizona State University’s Morrison School of Agribusiness.

She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Xavier's College-University of Calcutta (India) in 2012. She holds a master’s degree in economics is from the Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics in Pune, India in 2014. She received her Ph.D. in applied economics from Auburn University in 2022. She also worked at International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India.

Her research primarily focuses on consumer economics with an intersection of food policy and nutrition. A central focus of her work is understanding how household financial limitations affect food insecurity—a persistent issue in both developed and developing countries—and its implications for long-term health, productivity, and well-being. Her approach also emphasizes nutrition-sensitive demand analysis, exploring not just how much food is consumed, but what kind of food is chosen under varying economic conditions and its implications on food security. In her current research, she investigates how food assistance programs such as SNAP interact with the availability and effectiveness of informal food safety nets, including food banks. In addition to her work in developed countries, she also conducts research in developing countries to examine the dynamics of food security.
