Academic Year Component

The academic year experience for UBMS includes in-school, after-school and weekend services to participants and their families. Specific offerings may include:

1. In-Person or virtual course support in core academic subjects of math, English language arts, science and foreign languages.
2. Workshops that focus on leadership development, life skills, financial literacy, cultural awareness, college knowledge, etc.
3. Individual support from a STEM adviser to develop individual learning plans and college goals.
4. College admissions test-intensive seminars.

Summer Component

The six-week summer academy provides students with a summer experience, including a two-week residential component on the Texas Tech University Lubbock campus. The program operates from Sunday to Friday, with participants returning home Friday afternoons. Specifically, students experience the following:

1. Academic Instruction in literature and composition, math, foreign language and STEM CORE courses (i.e., agriculture, medicine, engineering) through a project-based learning model.
2. Exposure to a college campus (i.e., residence halls, dining halls, student organizations, support services and resources, etc.).
3. Excursions for cultural enrichment or career exposure.
4. Career and job shadow experience to explore interests.
5. College tours to colleges and universities across the nation.

All services are funded by the U.S. Department of Education. If a student is selected for Upward Bound Math & Science, there is no charge to the student or their family.

Students interested in the Upward Bound Math & Science Program must adhere to the following:

1. Must be a potential first-generation college student OR meet the income guideline as set forth by the Department of Education
2. Must attend Estacado High School or Monterey High School
3. Feeder schools consist of Dunbar College Prep, Atkins Middle School, Evans Middle School, and O.L. Slaton Middle School
4. Must have completed or on track to complete Algebra I
5. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA
6. Must have the desire to enroll in and complete a post-secondary program in STEM, agriculture or medicine

NEW STUDENT APPLICATION




The Upward Bound Math & Science application process consists of the following:

1. Completion of the paper application*
2. Hard copies of the application are available in the counseling offices at all eligible high schools and feeder middle schools
3. Student and parent introductory meeting with the assistant director and STEM adviser of Upward Bound Math & Science
4. Completion of eligibility form: The eligibility form will need to be signed by both the student and guardian during the introductory meeting

*The selection committee cannot review your application until all supplemental documents have been received. The following is a list of what must be included with your completed application:

• Copy of your high school transcript
• Copy of your last report card/testing results (STAAR/PSAT); Ninth grade students should submit eighth grade results
• Photocopy of your parent's most current income tax return (must list the student as the dependent)
• School record release form
• Photocopy of your Social Security card
• Recommendation from your high school counselor
• Recommendation from your math teacher
• Recommendation from your science teacher
• Copy of your resident card if you are listed as a permanent resident of the U.S.

Decision Process

The Upward Bound Math & Science Program will review applications on a rolling admissions basis starting in early August 2023. High school sophomores will be considered for the fall 2023 semester or later, depending on the time of application. High school freshmen are encouraged to apply after completing one semester and will be considered for the spring 2024 or fall 2024 semester, depending on the time of application.

Students can expect an admission decision via email after having completed the process. Please note that ALL selected students MUST submit registration paperwork and attend an orientation with a parent or guardian. New students start Sept. 1 of each academic year.
