About the Red Raider Battalion
The Red Raider Battalion is Texas Tech University's Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. Through academic coursework, military training and leadership development, the Battalion prepares students to commission as officers in the United States Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve.
Cadets are Texas Tech students first. They pursue degrees across the university while developing the leadership, discipline, communication and decision-making skills expected of Army officers.

History of Army ROTC
The modern Reserve Officers' Training Corps was formally established through the National Defense Act of 1916, bringing military training programs at colleges and universities into a national system for developing commissioned officers.
Army ROTC has since become one of the Army's primary sources of commissioned officers. Cadets complete their college education while participating in military science coursework, leadership development and field training designed to prepare them for service as second lieutenants.
Today, Army ROTC programs operate at colleges and universities across the United States under U.S. Army Cadet Command. Graduates commission into Active Duty, the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.
The Red Raider Battalion
Texas Tech's Red Raider Battalion carries forward the university's tradition of military education and service by preparing students for leadership in the Army. The program combines the academic experience of Texas Tech University with the professional development and training required of future Army officers.
Cadets develop progressively through the Army ROTC curriculum, beginning with introductory Military Science coursework and advancing into leadership positions within the Battalion. Senior cadets take on greater responsibility for planning, training and mentoring younger cadets as they prepare for commissioning.
The Battalion's graduates have commissioned into a wide range of Army branches and professional fields, including infantry, armor, aviation, military intelligence, engineering, logistics, medical services, signal, finance and other specialties.

Alumni & Commissioning
Red Raider Battalion alumni continue a tradition of leadership and military service that extends well beyond graduation. Each commissioning class joins generations of Texas Tech graduates who have served as Army officers across a wide range of branches and assignments.
From Cadet to Army Officer
Upon completing Army ROTC, academic and commissioning requirements, eligible cadets commission as second lieutenants. Graduates may enter Active Duty, the Army National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserve depending on their commissioning pathway and Army requirements.
Recent Red Raider Battalion graduates have entered branches including armor, infantry, engineering, finance, medical services, military intelligence, signal, logistics and other Army career fields.
Red Raider Battalion Alumni
The Battalion values the continued connection between current cadets and the officers who came before them. Alumni experience reflects the many ways Texas Tech Army ROTC graduates contribute to the Army, their professions and their communities after commissioning.
