Scholarships & Service Benefits
Army ROTC offers several ways to help students support the cost of their education while preparing to commission as Army officers. Depending on eligibility and commissioning goals, students may compete for Army ROTC scholarships, receive cadet stipends and allowances or participate through the Army National Guard and Simultaneous Membership Program.
Scholarship programs, benefits and service commitments can vary. Students should work directly with the Red Raider Battalion before making financial or academic decisions based on Army ROTC benefits.
Army ROTC Scholarships
Army ROTC scholarships are competitive and are generally awarded based on academic achievement, leadership potential, extracurricular involvement, physical readiness and other qualifications. Scholarships are not awarded solely on financial need.
National Army ROTC Scholarships
High school students may compete for national Army ROTC scholarships before beginning college. Depending on the award, scholarships may cover multiple years of undergraduate study.
Students interested in national scholarships should begin the application process early and review current Army application deadlines and eligibility requirements.
Campus-Based Scholarships
Students already enrolled at Texas Tech may have opportunities to compete for campus-based Army ROTC scholarships when funding is available.
Availability depends on Army requirements, funding, eligibility and the student's remaining academic timeline.
National Guard Scholarships
Students planning to serve in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve may qualify for scholarship programs designed for reserve-component commissioning.
These options may include Dedicated Army National Guard scholarships or Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty opportunities when available.
What Scholarships May Cover
Depending on the scholarship and current Army program rules, benefits may include:
- Tuition and eligible fees or an approved room-and-board option
- A monthly ROTC stipend
- An annual book allowance
- Other authorized education benefits

Financial Benefits
Contracted cadets and students participating through certain Army programs may receive additional financial benefits beyond tuition assistance or scholarships.
ROTC Stipend
Eligible contracted cadets may receive a monthly stipend during the academic year. Eligibility and payment amounts are determined by current Army ROTC policy.
Book Allowance
Some Army ROTC scholarship programs include an annual allowance intended to help with required books and academic materials.
National Guard Education Benefits
Eligible National Guard Soldiers may have access to state or federal tuition assistance, GI Bill benefits or other education programs depending on their service status and eligibility.
Drill Pay & Military Benefits
Students serving in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve may receive drill pay and may qualify for additional military benefits based on their service status.
Army ROTC and military education benefits are separate from Texas Tech financial aid. Students should also complete any university financial aid requirements that apply to their situation.
Texas Tech Student Financial Aid & Scholarships
Army National Guard
The Army National Guard provides another pathway for students interested in military service while completing their degree. National Guard Soldiers generally serve part time while maintaining civilian or academic responsibilities.
Texas Tech students serving in the National Guard may be able to combine Guard service with Army ROTC participation and work toward commissioning as officers.
National Guard Service
National Guard service typically includes regular unit training requirements, such as monthly drills and annual training, in addition to any Army ROTC obligations.
Commissioning Through Army ROTC
National Guard Soldiers who participate in Army ROTC may pursue commissioning through the Red Raider Battalion while continuing to train with their assigned Guard unit.
Simultaneous Membership Program
The Simultaneous Membership Program, commonly called SMP, allows eligible Army National Guard or Army Reserve Soldiers to participate in Army ROTC while serving in a reserve-component unit.
SMP cadets receive leadership development through both the Red Raider Battalion and their assigned military unit. The program can provide practical experience working with commissioned officers and noncommissioned officers while completing college and ROTC requirements.
How SMP Works
- Participate in Army ROTC at Texas Tech.
- Remain assigned to an Army National Guard or Army Reserve unit.
- Attend required unit training.
- Complete ROTC academic and training requirements.
- Work toward commissioning as an Army officer.
Possible SMP Benefits
Depending on eligibility and current program rules, benefits may include:
- ROTC stipend
- Drill pay
- GI Bill benefits
- State or federal tuition assistance
- Scholarship opportunities
- Additional military education benefits
Leadership Experience
SMP cadets may train in roles that provide exposure to officer responsibilities while serving with their National Guard or Army Reserve unit.
Reserve-Component Commissioning
Some scholarships and SMP pathways are specifically designed for cadets who intend to commission into the Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve rather than compete for Active Duty.
Service Commitments
Army ROTC financial benefits can carry military service obligations. Students should understand the requirements associated with a scholarship, contract or National Guard program before accepting benefits.
Contracted Cadets
Students who contract with Army ROTC commit to completing ROTC requirements and, upon successful graduation and commissioning, fulfilling an Army service obligation.
Scholarship Recipients
Accepting an Army ROTC scholarship generally creates additional contractual requirements and a service commitment after commissioning.
Active Duty
Some cadets compete for Active Duty assignments after commissioning. Selection depends on Army requirements and the cadet's commissioning pathway.
Army National Guard & Army Reserve
Cadets participating through reserve-component scholarships or certain National Guard programs may be committed to serving in the Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve after commissioning.
