Biography
Sergio A. Arias is a Ph.D. Candidate in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University.
He holds two bachelors degrees in chemical engineering and mechanical engineering
from universities in Venezuela.
His research focuses on the development of electrochemical technologies for environmental
applications, with particular emphasis on the detection and degradation of per- and
polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). As a researcher in the Chemical & Electrochemical
Technology and Innovation (CETI) Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Gerardine
Botte, Sergio investigates electrochemical sensing mechanisms and advanced electrode
materials aimed at improving water quality and enabling scalable remediation strategies.
In parallel with his research, Sergio is actively involved in scientific leadership
and service. He holds leadership roles in multiple professional and research-centered
organizations, where he contributes to outreach initiatives, mentorship, and the organization
of academic and professional development activities. Through these roles, he works
to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, support graduate student development,
and expand engagement within the broader scientific community.
