About Costa Rica

General Info

Costa Rica is a Spanish speaking country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Panama to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It stretches across 51,100 square kilometers (about twice the area of New Jersey) and is home to approximately 5 million inhabitants.

The country is divided into seven provinces: San José, Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Puntarenas, Guanacaste, and Limón, each province with its unique charm, cultural heritage, and natural wonders.

Due to Costa Rica's location in a tropical zone between two oceans, warm and humid weather predominates year-round. Most people would describe the weather as mild. Temperatures normally range from 71 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Still, temperatures are influenced by topography, so microclimates are common. There are two major seasons: the dry season (December to April) and the rainy season (May to November). The temperatures during the dry season typically remain in the high 80 degrees Fahrenheit. During the rainy season, mornings may be sunny, with showers almost every afternoon.

Religion in Costa Rica is an essential aspect of the country's cultural identity and has played a significant role in shaping its history and traditions. Most of the population is Catholic, but the country is known for its religious tolerance and diversity, with freedom of religion enshrined in the Costa Rican constitution.

Considered the safest country in the region, Costa Rica enjoys a stable, democratic political climate. It is one of the few countries that does not have an army; instead, it generously funds its public education system and healthcare system. This commitment to peace is deeply ingrained in the nation's identity and is reflected in various aspects of its history, culture, and governance. This commitment and its unique approach to governance have earned it global recognition and respect. The country's dedication to promoting peace at home and abroad sets an inspiring example for other nations, showing that a commitment to non-violence, diplomacy, and cooperation can lead to a prosperous and harmonious society.

Although the country covers only 0.03% of the Earth's surface, it is one of the most ecologically diverse countries in the world, sheltering about 6% of the world's biodiversity. Costa Rica's dedication to nature and sustainability serves as an inspiring example to the world. The country's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and natural resources while fostering economic growth through sustainable practices demonstrates that environmental conservation and human well-being can go hand in hand.

In addition to its rich biodiversity, unique location, and the “pura vida,” Costa Rica is recognized as a hub of talent and innovation, positioned as an ideal location for multinational companies to conduct operations. To date, more than 250 international companies operate or are expanding operations in the national territory.
