Skype for Business migration to Microsoft Teams
Posted December 12, 2024
Texas Tech University is phasing out Skype for Business and adopting Microsoft Teams as the primary communications platform. Skype will be fully retired by April 2025, and the transition to Teams is already underway.
What are the benefits of Teams?
Microsoft Teams is included in Texas Tech's licensing agreement and offers:
- Enhanced security and advanced communication features.
- Seamless collaboration through meetings, chats and file sharing.
- Integration with Microsoft 365 tools, including SharePoint and OneDrive.
- Improved efficiency and data protection.
Will existing phones work?
Many existing phones are compatible with Teams, but some devices will need to be replaced. IT will soon notify impacted departments about replacement options.
What do I need to do?
Skype remains the platform for phone calls (including 911) until the migration is complete, but we encourage you to start using Teams for:
- Messaging and chats
- Online meetings
- Screen sharing
- File sharing
- Voice and video calls (Teams-to-Teams only at this time, internal to TTU)
You can obtain the latest version of the Teams app for desktop or mobile by visiting https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app.
How can I get more information?
IT is committed to supporting faculty and staff throughout this transition. Training resources and additional details, including timelines, are available at https://askit.ttu.edu/teams.
