TTU/TTUHSC email Global Address List (GAL) separation
Posted November 22, 2024
As you may be aware, TTU Information Technology has been working with the TTUHSC and TTUHSC El Paso IT Divisions, Microsoft, and other consultants on a major project to enable TTUHSC and TTUHSC EP to begin using their own Microsoft 365 (M365) environment. This two-phase project will provide significant improvements to workflows and collaboration between TTU, TTUHSC, and TTUHSC EP.
Phase 1 will include migrating TTUHSC from on-premise Exchange email services to Exchange Online. This phase has an expected completion time of the end of the spring semester, 2025.
Phase 2 will include the rollout of other M365 cloud services for TTUHSC, including Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business. This phase will greatly enhance the ability for TTU and TTUHSC employees to cross-collaborate using state-of-the-art tools.
Current status
To migrate TTUHSC to Exchange Online, TTUHSC and TTU will be required to separate our currently combined email Global Address List (GAL) into separate address books.
- When this separation occurs, TTU users will no longer see TTUHSC users in the TTU address book, and TTUHSC users will no longer see TTU users in the TTUHSC address book.
- Additionally, email distribution lists that contain both TTU users and TTUHSC addresses will be modified to contain only addresses belonging to the email system that owns the distribution list (ttu.edu or ttuhsc.edu).
EXAMPLE: A distribution list named Senators@ttu.edu with members John.Smith@ttu.edu, Jane.Doe@ttu.edu, and Jack.Flash@ttuhsc.edu will be modified to only have members John.Smith@ttu.edu and Jane.Doe@ttu.edu. The TTUHSC member, Jack.Flash@ttuhsc.edu will be removed from the Senators@ttu.edu distribution list.
NOTE: That this announcement is for informational purposes only and there is no action required from you at this time. As the project progresses, targeted emails will be sent directly to distribution list owners and will include instructions and remediation options.
