Julianna Kilpatrick

Major: Kinesiology

Classification: Senior

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? To help bring awareness about Kinesiology and Sport Management globally at TTU and throughout our community, to help educate about what types of jobs are available with our degree, and advocate for my fellow students.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I felt having a practical application for why the human body does what it does during exercise or under stress would help springboard my career into Sports Medicine.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Network, get to know fellow students and faculty, take advantage of all of the student support services offered by Texas Tech such as student wellness, counseling, the stress spa, writing lab, tutoring, supplemental instruction just to name a few and find a club or organization to join and become active in our community.

And use the Rec Center!! The leisure pool ROCKS!

Future Career/Goals: Sports Medicine Doctor

What are some of your hobbies? I am a sports junky especially football! I also enjoy hiking as well as camping. I'm an avid reader especially when floating around the lazy river. I LOVE the symphony and art.

Interesting Fact: I'm a non-traditional student who has lived in 48 States.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to be a departmental ambassador because I love Texas Tech and the department of Sports Management, but I see aspects where we can improve the environments that our students learn in. I hope to make improvements that the next generation of Texas Tech students can utilize to be more prepared to enter the workforce.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I was originally a Chemistry major, but I decided to switch after a cousin got a job in the sports industry and I reached out to ask what I could do to get there. I then met with an advisor in the department and the rest is history!

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? My advice to incoming freshman would be to get involved, and follow your goal. The more people you met and experience you get, the better! Also don't give up on your goal, if you really want it you can make it happen!

Future Career/Goals: My future goal is to work in marketing for a cycling company and eventually own and operate my own velodrome track to be used for hopefully my non-profit! I hope to get underprivileged youth in San Antonio involved in cycling.

What are some of your hobbies? Some of my hobbies include cycling, playing soccer, traveling, and eating!

Interesting Fact: I watch about 3-4 documentaries a week.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I love my major and my department and I'd love to share my enthusiasm with other prospective Kinesiology majors as well as current and future staff members in the Kinesiology building.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? My love for fitness and helping others reach their fitness goals is what originally made me choose Kinesiology as a major. Then as I got further into my major and learned more about how the body works, I became obsessed with anatomy, human performance, exercise physiology, and how different foods, supplements, etc. affect the body. If we're being honest, I love everything that this degree has to offer, these are just a few of my favorites.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen?  Take your grades and friendships seriously and always make time for yourself. Find a career you love and you'll never work a day in your life!

Future Career/Goals: I'm still not 100% sure but what I'm leaning towards right now is studying and doing research in human performance or exercise physiology within Texas Tech's Kinesiology graduate school program.

What are some of your hobbies? I obviously really enjoy working out, but I also enjoy reading for fun and hanging out with friends from class and work.

Interesting Fact: I studied abroad in Spain in the summer of 2017.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to make a difference on our campus specifically within our department.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I have always been fascinated by injuries specifically those related to sports.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Join a club and get involved!

Future Career/Goals: Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer

What are some of your hobbies? Competing in pageants, playing the violin, running, and cooking.

Major: Kinesiology & Nutrition

Classification: Senior

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to find a way to empower my fellow Kinesiology students, as there are so many of us, yet in certain aspects, we are underserved. Working together with the rest of our departmental ambassadors, faculty, and staff, has shown me that we can make a difference, and move forward together. It gives me the opportunity to serve as a voice for my students.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I wanted to be a Kinesiology major because it started with my passion in our well-being. Exercise plays a big part in living a healthy life so we can accomplish all the things we want from life. After taking my initial coursework in Kinesiology, I realized that the major itself was such a versatile study that could be applied in a multitude of ways to any applicable occupation one wanted to pursue!

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Get a planner, and use it! It's such an easily overlooked aspect of college life, but it's so easy to fall behind without one.

Future Career/Goals: Corporate Wellness & Healthcare Administration

What are some of your hobbies? Working out, and managing my dogs' Instagram.

Interesting Fact: I am a military brat, so I lived overseas 6 years of my life, prior coming to college. I've lived in Germany, visited Italy, lived in South Korea, and have visited Japan multiple times.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to be an ambassador because I had a strong desire to get involved in my department. The Ambassador program gave me an opportunity to become a representative of a department that I love being a part of.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I chose to be a Kinesiology major because I am interested in the current research that professionals in kinesiology departments are publishing. Additionally, I like that all of the kinesiology courses are based around a principle that I highly value: The promotion of exercise to increase performance and health.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Do not be discouraged if you are not excelling at everything. The beauty of higher education is the ability to specialize in what interests you the most. Every day is a new day to get things right. Wake up, show up, and never give up.

Future Career/Goals: I would like to become a Rehabilitative Clinician and educator in kinesiology.

What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy watching and playing sports, running, caring for children, and spending time with my family.

Interesting Fact: I listen to 'Sweet Child O' Mine' by Guns N' Roses almost every day.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wish to be a helper and a guide to my fellow collegiate. I love connecting with people and am truly blessed to be in a position where I can connect with not only new students, but also new faculty. I like to be a friendly face and to embody that charisma that my brighten someone's day.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major?  Health and fitness are passions of mine! Kinesiology is applicable to everyday life and I wish to strive to help others see the importance of leading a healthy quality of life, but I need and want the right information. 

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? You are here to learn and prepare for your future field. You will be busy, but do not neglect social support and time with friends. No matter how stressed or 'too busy' you think you are, seclusion will send you in a downward spiral. Get out of the dorm, make lasting friendships, be with people and experience college life!

Future Career/Goals: Exercise Specialist in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab

What are some of your hobbies?  Comics and anything related are joys of mine and I will talk circles around anyone who says that Batman sucks! I love movies and TV shows. I don't need a plan, I just love being with people! Wave me down in the hall!

Interesting Facts: I have Sam and Dean Winchester's Anti-Demon Possession sigil tattooed on my chest.  And I make a variety of voice impressions, most memorable of which is a tendency to randomly 'meow' like a cat.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to be a Departmental Ambassador because I believe that it is important to give back to the university, and specifically to the department my field of study is in. I want to better serve the students and faculty of the this department that has given me so much.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I chose to be a Kinesiology major because I believe that "exercise is medicine." I wanted to gain a better understanding of the importance of exercise and to someday incorporate this into my future career.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Step out of your comfort zone! Get involved in something that interests you and don't be afraid to give your all into something. Chase your dreams and career goals with fierce determination. You won't get anywhere by standing in the back, step up and work hard for what you want to achieve. You only have four (maybe five) years at this amazing university and they fly by so make the most of your time.

Future Career/Goals: My goal is to be a physical therapist, and I am hoping to work with pediatrics!

What are some of your hobbies? I am a huge baseball fan! I love attending games and watching the Texas Rangers and the Red Raiders.In my spare time, I also enjoy attempting to recreate projects off of Pinterest.

Interesting Fact: I was not named after nor am I from the city of Odessa, Texas. It is a family name! I also get asked this nearly every day.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to show others why choosing Kinesiology or Sport Management is a great choice of a major. Both majors offer a diverse range of opportunities.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major: I am fascinated with the human body and how it works, which is exactly why I chose Kinesiology. Also know that I changed my minor to Health Professions instead of Nutrition I am working on going to nursing school.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Learn to manage your time now, due big assignments more than a day in advance. Also, you're here to go to school, but don't forget to have fun.

Future Career/Goals: I want to be a nurse. I am fascinated by the human body and how it works, but I also really want to help people.

What are some of your hobbies? I'm really enjoy crafting like scrapbooking, painting, and decorating. I like to read and exercise, but my favorite hobby is to go dancing.

Interesting Fact: I'm from Oceanside, CA and I've been in the only casino in Texas.

Why did you want to become a department ambassador? I love my major and wanted to contribute to the department in a bigger way. I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and collaborate more with the amazing students and faculty that make up the department. I also wanted to be a resource for students by bringing awareness to everything we have to offer.

Why did you choose to be a kinesiology major? I've always had a fascination with the human body and how it responds to training and injury. It's the perfect fit.

What is your advice to incoming freshman? Never compare yourself to others around you, every single person you meet is different from you, nobody is running the exact same race as you, focus on bettering yourself to finish your race.

Future Career/Goals: Physical Therapy

What are some of your hobbies: Attending Red Raider sporting events, traveling, and outdoors activities like kayaking and hiking.

Interesting fact: I have 5 rescue dogs: Carmel, Cheeto, Louie, Winston, and Brooklyn

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I wanted to be a Departmental Ambassador to have the chance to make an impact in the department and use my servant's heart to give back to such an amazing program.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major? I have always been passionate about sport. I grew up playing EVERYTHING and I wanted to pick a major that I would learn something from and use in my career.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? To incoming freshmen, never let someone tell you can't do something, and if they do, strive to prove them wrong.

Future Career/Goals: To become a physical therapist for a sport's team.

What are some of your hobbies? My hobbies include running, teaching my dog new tricks, and reading.

Interesting Fact: I had my first rib resected on my left and right side along with the removal of my pec minors and scalene muscle.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? Being a part of the department was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. Learning more how to further my career, work with faculty and staff, and set myself a part from other classmates with this experience.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major: I love sports, and being part to help a team succeed makes it fun and exciting. There is something new every day that comes up.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? Get involved as much as possible! Meeting students and professors will only help you.

Future Career/Goals: I'll be going to graduate school, after that I want to start my career in Event Operations at the collegiate level then move up to the professional level in time.

What are some of your hobbies? Going to concerts, playing with dogs, watching Netflix, playing intramural sports.

Interesting Fact: Before college I've been to over 5o+ concerts for free by winning them on the radio!

Classification: Graduate Student.

Why did you want to be a Departmental Ambassador? I want more experience being a liaison between the student and administration because my future career path is to be in the sport administration department. Even more I bring added value to the position given my background as a student-athlete and my experience working with diverse students.

Why did you choose to be a Kinesiology, Sport Management, etc. major: I chose to get my Masters in Sport Management because I have a passion to work in the sports administration field.

What is your advice to incoming freshmen? The best advice that I can give to incoming freshman is to stay focused! Remember why you came to college and to stay ahead of work that is due, so that you can still have the social life you deserve.

Future Career/Goals: I aspire to be an Athletic Director in the near future at a small university.

What are some of your hobbies? I love to exercise and binge watch shows on Netflix.

Interesting Fact: I dislike tomatoes, but I love ketchup.
