Required Hours

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for admission, prospective students must have successfully completed an associate's degree, which includes satisfying the Texas core curriculum requirements, or the equivalent. Before starting the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology courses, applicants need 16 credit hours of life and physical sciences, covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and physics.

These requirements are in place to ensure that students entering the Kinesiology program possess a fundamental understanding of key concepts in the sciences, laying the groundwork for a successful and impactful academic journey in the field of health and wellness.

Introduction to Kinesiology (KIN 1301)

Provides an overview of the field of kinesiology, including its history, sub-disciplines, and career opportunities.

Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II (ZOOL 2403 & ZOOL 2404) 

Covers the structure and function of the human body, focusing on the musculoskeletal and physiological systems.

Motor Learning (KIN 3303) 

Provides a study of the many aspects of learning and performance of motor skills.

Exercise Physiology (KIN 3305) 

Explores the physiological responses and adaptations to exercise and physical activity.

Medical Terminology for Kinesiology Majors (KIN 3307) 

Introduces essential medical terminology relevant to the field of kinesiology.

Exercise and Sport Psychology (KIN 3318) 

Examines the psychological factors influencing exercise behavior, performance, and adherence.

Anatomical Kinesiology (KIN 3346) 

Studies the structure and function of human movement, including biomechanical principles.

Introduction to Biomechanics (KIN 4301) 

Focuses on the mechanical aspects of human movement and exercise.

Advanced Strength and Conditioning (KIN 4305) 

Explores advanced concepts in strength training and conditioning for athletic performance.

Exercise Testing and Prescription (KIN 4306) 

Covers the principles and methodologies for assessing fitness levels and designing exercise programs.

Plus, students must complete six credit hours of electives from the following options:

Science of a Healthy Lifestyle (KIN 3308) 

Studies the physiological basis for living a healthy lifestyle centered on the importance of participating in physical activity.

Lifespan Motor Development (KIN 3314) 

Examines factors that influence motor development from conception through adulthood. Discusses theoretical perspectives and practical applications of motor development principles throughout the life span.

Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (KIN 3323) 

Provides an introduction to athletic training and the qualifications and functions of the athletic trainer including emphasis on common athletic injuries.

Principles and Theories in Exercise Psychology (KIN 4363) 

Applies psychological principles and theories regarding antecedents and consequences of exercise behaviors to healthy individuals and clinical populations.

Internship in Kinesiology (KIN 4357) 

Provides work-related experiences in physical activity, exercise, health promotion, and related exercise science organizations, including commercial, corporate, and clinical settings

Communication Literacy Requirement 

Kinesiology majors are required to develop effective communication skills necessary for careers in exercise, fitness, and healthcare. This includes verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills. Courses fulfilling this requirement include KIN 3347, KIN 4305, and KIN 4306.

Minors

Kinesiology majors are required to complete an 18-hour minor, chosen from approved options such as Athletic Coaching, Biology, Chemistry, Health, Nutrition, Psychology, Public Health, Spanish, Sport Management, and Sports Medicine. This provides students with additional expertise in a complementary field.

Foreign Language Requirement 

Students must complete 3 hours of foreign language study at the sophomore level or above. Placement in language courses is determined by previous experience or examination.
