Partnering for Parks
>
The Jim Bertram Canyon Lakes Park System contains a significant proportion of the
public open spaces in the city of Lubbock. Originating as a FEMA project following
the 1970 Lubbock tornado, this 6-mile-long linear park chain now serves stakeholders
from around the region and across the socio-economic spectrum. Recent efforts by
the city to develop a masterplan for this area have created renewed interest and opportunities
for the local design community to enhance the function, resilience, and vibrancy of
the existing Canyon Lakes while anticipating various future scenarios for growth and
development. Working in collaboration with outside partners and perspectives, the
goal of our Fall design studio at DoLA is to understand this landscape and to imagine
innovative landscape scenarios that enhance the connectivity between various components
and properties within the system to establish a cohesive network of vibrant green
spaces.
This studio is being conducted in collaboration with HALFF and Associates, an award-winning
regional design and consulting firm. HALFF is providing key aspects of the design
brief, and representatives from the firm will be involved periodically throughout
the course to provide feedback, and guide project development.
To kickoff these efforts, our students recently participated in a three-day intensive
process that included collaborative site inventory and analysis, a design charette
in which students identified various constraints and opportunities for the canyon
lakes district, and a presentation of their initial findings to key decision-makers
at the City of Lubbock. We are excited to continue exploring the role of landscape
architecture in this process as we envision inclusive and vibrant futures for public
spaces here and throughout the region!
