Professional Licensure

General Disclosure

Notice to students pursuing programs that may lead to a professional license or certification required for employment.

Some programs at Texas Tech University may lead to a professional license or certification needed for employment. Requirements for these licenses or certifications vary by state, which can affect a student's ability to obtain them after completing the program.

Disclosure Requirement

According to U.S. Department of Education regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), schools must disclose if their programs meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification in each state. Below are the determinations made by the administrative departments regarding their programs' curricula.

NC-SARA Membership

Texas Tech is a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). This allows the university to offer distance education in all member states and territories. However, NC-SARA membership does not exempt Texas Tech from state-specific professional licensing requirements. Licensing requirements in Texas may not be sufficient for licensure in other states.

Student Responsibility

Students planning to enroll in or change their major to a program that may lead to licensure should:

  1. Review State Requirements: Check the specific licensing requirements for the state where you seek licensure.
  2. Consult Advisors: Discuss licensure implications with the department and your advisors.

Texas Tech strives to provide current information on state licensure boards, but requirements may change. Besides academic requirements, licensing boards may also require professional exams, background checks, years of experience, training, etc.

Recommendations

Before starting a program, contact the licensing entity in the state where you seek licensure for specific certification or licensure requirements. Texas Tech is not liable if a student cannot qualify for licensure or certification in their desired state or territory.
