Mollie Abernathy: Lubbock's First Businesswoman
Mollie Abernathy, one of Lubbock's early settlers, was a pioneer in every sense of the word. She was a homesteader, rancher, railroad promoter and far-sighted businesswoman. Though suffering devastating hardships, she persevered to considerable success. Mollie was a mentor for young women interested in business and was active in organizations fighting for the rights of women.
Instructor Cindy Martin is the archivist for the Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church and former archivist at Texas Tech's Southwest Collection. She currently serves on the Lubbock County Historical Commission and Board of the Lubbock Heritage Society.
