Introduction to Chess
With over 800 million players worldwide, chess has captivated inquisitive minds since its origin in India around 600 C.E. Today, the game remains so intricate that fewer than 1,500 grandmasters actively compete. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to chess, covering its rich history, the board and the pieces, along with essential game principles. By the end, youll gain an appreciation for chesss depth, along with skills to play competitive games with family and friends. You may even feel inspired to join tournaments or pursue lessons to advance further as a player. Registration is for all four sessions.

Pinta Trail: A Journey Into History
The Pinta Trail, once used by Native Americans, explorers and settlers, connected San Antonio to the Presidio San Sabá (near modern Menard, Texas) and was used by the Spanish to reach Santa Fe well into the 19th century. In 1845, German immigrants established a route from New Braunfels to Fredericksburg, linking it to the Pinta Trail for European settlers. In 1847, Ferdinand von Roemer traveled this path with John Meusebach to Fredericksburg and beyond. The trail, later known as the Upper Emigrant Trail, guided Forty-Niners to the California gold fields under Fort Martin Scotts protection.

Through a Curators Eyes at the Grace Museum
This major exhibition of Texas artists work from the 20th Century reveals much about Texas people, unmistakable landscape and the Great Depression, told through painting and photography. Judy Deaton, chief curator, will join us in the main gallery to visit about the art of William Lester, a member of the Dallas Nine who helped define Texas Regionalism. In adjacent galleries members will see the powerful photographic images that documented American life in the heartland for the Farm Security Administration.
Deaton is an author, art historian, frequent guest speaker and art juror at organizations in Texas and nationally. She was a recipient of the SMU Meadows Artistic Scholarship Graduate Award in Art History.

Hayfields and Horseflesh: Stories From Morris Ranch
Today the quiet beauty and the lonely limestone buildings of Morris Ranch, a scattered ghost town 12 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, offer only hints of the colorful history once made at this world-famous training ground for racehorses.
Instructor Michael Barr writes the local history column Hindsights for the Fredericksburg Standard. The author of five books and numerous short stories, he is a regular contributor to Rock and Vine Magazine.

John Arthur Martinez: Life in Stories and Songs
Join us as John Arthur Martinez shares the story of his journey to becoming a full-time singer-songwriter, with a song accompaniment describing each chapter of his life. He will discuss how the journey began in grade school and the enormous influence Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, and his mentors had on his career. He will include a description of his performances in domestic and international venues and highlight some unlikely private performances. He will share stories about opening for superstars like Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakum, and Elton John. He will then implore participants to search their lives for a possible song inspired by a moment in their experiences.

Butterflies Are Free
Tyler Sparks directs “Butterflies Are Free” live at Abilene Community Theatre. The lighthearted and engaging plays original run was 1,128 performances. Set in 1970s Manhattan, a visually impaired young man falls in love with a free-spirited hippie girl. The young mans disapproving mother provides plenty of laughs as she intervenes.
Abilene Community Theatre, founded in 1954, is one of the oldest continually operating theatrical organizations in Texas. It exists as a 100% volunteer organization.

New EPA Rules Pick Up the Pace To Clean Power
A suite of new rules finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce air, water and waste pollution from power plants is intended to pave the way to cleaner power generation in the United States. The EPAs initiatives work to push forward improved air emissions controls, reductions in the discharge of certain coal ash related wastewaters, and assessment and cleanup of legacy coal ash disposal units. This class will provide an overview of these new rules and what it could mean for you.
Instructor Holly Fults has a degree in chemistry. As an environmental regulatory consultant for 26 years, she has supported industrial markets as well as federal and state governmental facilities to align operations with regulatory requirements and permits.

Our Furry Friends: The Evolution of Human-Pet Bonds
This class will cover the domestication of animals and how they move from woods to fields to barnyards and into the house, the different types of animals that people keep as pets, how different pet and human personalities blend, the future of pet ownership and related ethical issues, and if pet ownership an easier parenting option today.

Chuck Wagons and Cattle Drives
This course will explain the origins and early use of chuck wagons on cattle trail drives and ranches, as well as demonstrate cooking techniques over a wood fire, cooking equipment and cowboy jargon. Class participants can also experience hands-on cooking activities. After the presentation, the instructor will serve a meal from the wagon.
Instructor Monica Hightower is the owner and award-winning cook of the HX Chuck Wagon of Lubbock, Texas. The HX is a family heirloom wagon that cooks on ranches as well as for educational events, competitions and caterings. Hightower has more than 20 years of experience cooking on the wagon and enjoys preserving this historical aspect of the American West.

OLLI Book Club: Inland by Tea Obreht
“Inland” by Téa Obreht is a haunting, richly atmospheric novel set in the rugged, drought-stricken Arizona Territory of 1893. It follows two distinct characters: Nora, a resilient frontierswoman awaiting her husbands return amid a water crisis, and Lurie, a former outlaw haunted by ghosts, as their paths converge in unexpected ways. Blending myth and harsh reality, “Inland” explores themes of survival, loss and the deep thirst for connection in a vast, unforgiving landscape.

Hill Country Through Artists Eyes and Womens Lives
Explore early (1840-60s) Gillespie County and the Texas Hill Country through the art of Captain Seth Eastman, Richard Petri, Herman Lundquist and Louise Wueste, who captured the land and people in their work. Contrasting these visual depictions are the letters, diaries and memoirs of women from the era, revealing their lives, hardships and resilience.

Noah Smithwick: Local Legend
Noah Smithwick was a frontiersman, blacksmith and ranger who played a part in the saga of early Texas, eventually settling in Burnet County. Smithwick wrote a colorful autobiography which will provide a first-hand account of his adventures. In this presentation, local history buff Charles E. Watkins, Ph.D., portrays Smithwick and tells his story.

Amateur Artifact and Fossil Hunting Tips
The geology of the Texas Hill Country makes it a great place to hunt artifacts and fossils. This presentation will include advice on looking for fossils and prehistoric artifacts in Central Texas, including how to collect legally, ways to properly excavate and how to document significant finds. The speaker will also discuss his discoveries including that of a 700-year-old bison skeleton close to his home.

Amphibians and Reptiles of the Llano Estacado
Lou Densmore, Ph.D.,will discuss the biology of reptiles and amphibians, as well as various other animals that live in and around the Lubbock area. He will also show some of the venomous reptiles that are part of the educational collection in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University.
Densmore has been major professor for 22 doctoral and 23 graduate students who have graduated in Biological Sciences at Texas Tech since 1985.

Forgotten Towns of Lubbock County
By the turn of the 20th century, Lubbock County was dotted with small communities. Today, perhaps only a name is reminiscent of a place where people once worked and lived. Sometimes relics remain of a past community; often only memories exist. This program will explore the history of some of Lubbock Countys ghost towns.

Lubbocks Cotton Club: Not Your Usual Dance Hall
The Cotton Club holds a unique place in Lubbocks history and American music history as well. It brought well-known artists featuring a variety of music styles to Lubbock and was open to all races and social classes. In the early 1950s, a young Buddy Holly was influenced by hearing and meeting Elvis Presley at the Cotton Club. In later years, oilfield workers, farmers, cowboys and hippies came together to enjoy music and dancing at the Cotton Club.
Instructor Cindy Martin, was an archivist at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech, and currently serves on the Lubbock County Historical Commission and on the Board of the Lubbock Heritage Society.

Increased power, speed and styling fostered nationwide subcultures filled with hot rods, customs, lead sleds, low riders and rat rods. Join us as we explore the world of unique car clubs and the artful auto!

The Story of Marble Falls on the Colorado River
The city of Marble Falls was named after a waterfall on the Colorado River, which is now covered by the water impounded by Max Starke Dam. However, the bedrock of the falls is limestone, not marble, leading to the question of who named, or misnamed, the falls? This lecture will discuss the exploration along the Colorado River and the settlement of the Marble Falls area.
Instructor Bob Kent earned a bachelor's in geology from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's in history from Boise State University. He has published several professional and historical articles. He is on the board of directors for the Falls on the Colorado Museum.

Enjoy a Love Affair
“Love Affair,” the 1939 film directed by Leo McCarey, has a distinct place in the history of American movies. Its a film that has been remade several times, but this version is one of the outstanding achievements in the comedy romance genre. It features Michel Marnet (Charles Boyer) as an engaged ladies man who falls in love with singer Terry McKay (Irene Dunne) who is also spoken for. Even though the odds are against them, they eventually find a way to be together. Nominated for six Academy Awards, this film helped set the template for similar films to follow.

The City Cemetery, Der Stadt Friedhof, is an important landmark in Fredericksburg. It holds the stories and secrets of the towns history. Housing the remains of those who built and grew Fredericksburg, it contains noteworthy sculptures in the grave markers and signage. In this tour, local historian Glenn Treibs will lead the group through the cemetery as he selects key residents which reveal some of the stories of Fredericksburgs history.
Instructor Glen Treibs, M.S., is a retired educator and former president of the Gillespie County Historical Society. He served two years as chairman of the State Historical Commission and has provided entertaining and informative local history courses in Fredericksburg for many years.

Benefits of Strength Training on Vascular Aging
This presentation will cover how arteries function in young adults and the changes in arterial function and structure with aging. Well explore how arterial dysfunction affects blood pressure, glucose control and muscle health, including sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass. Aging also brings anabolic resistance, where muscle response to strength training is reduced. Research shows that dietary supplements can improve arterial function and enhance training responses. Findings from Dr. Figueroas studies and others will be presented on this topic.

Lyndon B. Johnsons Presidency at the LBJ Ranch
David D. Schafer will provide course participants with insights into Lyndon B. Johnsons historic presidency during the 1960s when he was governing the nation from the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall, Texas. Through stories, descriptions and a variety of media—such as photographs and audio-visual recordings—Schafer will share this compelling history with attendees.
Schafer, a native of Kansas, worked for the National Park Service for 32 years at historic sites in Kansas, Hawaii, Missouri, Puerto Rico, Oklahoma and Texas. In 2019, he retired as a supervisory park ranger at Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. In addition to researching and writing, he leads trolley tours of historic Fredericksburg.

An Updated View of Oil: Past, Present and Future
Petroleum has revolutionized our world. Dana Rowan will discuss oils origin, occurrence and production techniques that have led to our countrys record production levels. The course will address the economic benefits and environmental challenges of burning fossil fuels, emphasizing proposed and current technologies designed to ameliorate the environmental consequences of burning fossil fuel energy sources. Similar in scope to the authors previous OLLI course, this updated course will address the rapidly changing energy landscape.

From his home in the Texas Panhandle, John R. Myths and Facts of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Corps of Discovery, was the first great American exploration mission. It is also one of the least studied in American history classes. Following the Louisiana Purchase, the Corps went where no white man had been before and came home to tell about it. Since their return, facts, myths and legends emerged. This class will be a quick refresher on the expedition and explore some of the big myths that continue to follow the expedition.
Instructor Steve Kniffen has extensive teaching experience in lifelong learning, including two traveling Elderhostels that followed the route of Lewis and Clark from St. Louis to Portland. He has written 190 articles based on research he has gathered on the subject.

Rescued Animals Second Chance Horse Sanctuary
Founded in 2013 by Dr. Beth Nickels, Rescued Animals Second Chance Inc. is a non-profit charity formed to promote animal welfare through rescue, permanent shelter, veterinary care, and rehabilitation of unwanted, neglected and abused horses. Dr. Nickels, a Lubbock trauma and general surgeon, will describe her non-profit work with rescued horses and education about horse slaughter. There will be a follow-up to this class with a tour of the Double Nickel Ranch, which now has 55 rescued horses who will have a pasture and home for the rest of their lives.
Nickels is a Lubbock native, graduate of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and part of SWAT Surgical Associates, LLP.

Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery Tour
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was the first organization in the state of Texas to propagate and release freshwater mussels into the wild. Learn why these are some of the most endangered animals on the planet, their history and how Inks Dam National Fish Hatchery is rearing them. The lecture will also discuss the channel catfish propagation and how these fish fulfill tribal treaty agreements with the southwest Native Americans.
Instructor Bailey Gaines has a master's in fish biology from Texas Tech. He started the freshwater mussel propagation and research program at Inks Dam NFH. Instructor Jacqualyn Halmbacher has a bachelor's from Ohio University in freshwater, marine and environmental biology. She started implementing in vitro techniques at Inks Dam NFH in 2020.

Muscle Strengthening for Healthy Aging
Strong muscles support movement and independence, but aging can lead to declines in muscle mass and strength, impacting bones and metabolism. Fortunately, healthy habits can help preserve muscle. This course explores age-related muscle changes, their effects on the body, and offers an interactive discussion on habits to counteract these changes. A simple exercise demonstration will follow (optional to participate). The goal is to age strong! Athletic wear encouraged but not required. All fitness levels are welcome.
Instructor Danielle Levitt, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of exercise physiology at Texas Tech. Her research is funded by the National Institute on Aging and the National Strength & Conditioning Association Foundation.

Lubbock Through a Lens: The Art of Winston Reeves
The class will explore the life of Lubbock photographer Winston Reeves from his time as a student at Texas Tech through his career as a professional photographer. Reeves established his studio in 1938, served as an Army flight instructor at Breedlove Field during World War II and documented various aspects of everyday life on the South Plains until his passing in 1965. His wife, Annie Letha Reeves, was his partner in the business and kept it going for more than three decades after his passing.
Lynn Whitfield, Texas Tech's University Archivist, holds a bachelors in art, a masters in museum science and national archival certification. She is associate director of the West Texas Historical Association and president of the Lubbock Heritage Society.
