A Grand Getaway

Taylin Peoples

RSB, Grand Canyon 2024

Imagine, a self-proclaimed introvert whose daily duties include research, work, home duties, and studying, suddenly decides to venture into the lively chaos of the Grand Canyon; surrounded by a newfound community of 12 other adventurous souls. It was like being dropped into the “Extroverted Olympics” with a side of Uno. But amidst the jokes, games, and laughter; we found moments of reflection, connection, and plenty of surprises!

Alrighty, folks, grab your hiking boots and sense of adventure because I'm about to take you on a whirlwind journey through the Grand Canyon with TTU Raider Service Break (RSB).

Now, continue your imagination dear reader: 13 of us, divided into groups of 3, embarking on a three-day volunteer extravaganza smack dab in the middle of spring break 2024. I'll tell you what, it was a whole lot more than just directing the visitors looking for the “giant hole in the ground.”

Interestingly, it was about learning the history of the Grand Canyon, the vast career opportunities in the national park, and preservation and protection acts.

All while forging bonds that would last a lifetime, cooking up a storm, playing various card games, board games, and more.

But it wasn't all fun and games – okay, maybe it was mostly fun and games – but we also made time for reflection. Each night, we gathered around to tell our own version of "roses, thorns, and buds," where we shared the highlights, challenges, and hopes for the day ahead. It was a chance to pause, connect, and appreciate the beauty of the Grand Canyon and the camaraderie of our group.

Not only did we meet people from around the world during our volunteer activities, but we also had the privilege of getting to know some incredible individuals who volunteer and work for the park. These folks weren't just names on a badge; they were kind, welcoming souls who opened their hearts and shared their experiences with us. From tales of triumph to stories of hardship, they laid it all out on the table, serving as a wellspring of inspiration for our young, ambitious minds. A special shoutout to “The Band” or Deputy Superintendent, Brian Drapeaux, Volunteer Manager, Todd Nelson, both volunteers, Joanne and Debbie, our photographer, Max, and all the unsung heroes (firefighters and pilots) who make the Grand Canyon a truly magical place. You guys embody fulfillment!
