Whether you're an experienced tournament player or simply looking for opportunities to play chess at Texas Tech, the Texas Tech Chess Program provides students with opportunities to compete, improve their game and become part of the university's chess community.

The program includes players with a range of competitive experience, from club players to internationally titled players. Opportunities for involvement vary depending on a student's experience, interests and competitive goals.

Ways to Get Involved

Texas Tech Chess provides opportunities for students who want to play competitively, improve their skills or simply connect with other chess players on campus.

Play Chess

Connect with other Texas Tech students who play chess and take part in opportunities to practice and develop your game.

Train & Improve

Develop your skills through interaction with strong players and the competitive environment of the Texas Tech Chess Program.

Compete

Qualified players may have opportunities to represent Texas Tech in collegiate chess competition and other competitive events.

Get Involved

Students may also participate in chess events, scholastic activities and community programs supported by Texas Tech Chess.

Competitive Chess at Texas Tech

Texas Tech has a long history in collegiate chess, with students representing the university in regional and national competition. Competitive players have opportunities to develop their game within a program that has included grandmasters, international masters and other accomplished tournament players.

Students interested in competing for Texas Tech should contact the Chess Program with information about their chess experience and current rating. Program staff can provide more information about competitive opportunities and expectations.

Chess Scholarships

Competitive Scholarship Opportunities

Texas Tech Chess offers competitive scholarship opportunities for qualified undergraduate and graduate students with strong chess backgrounds.

Scholarship applicants are evaluated separately from general participation in the Chess Program. Students interested in financial support should review the scholarship requirements and complete the TTU Chess Scholarship Application.
