World Class Faculty

The Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures has faculty members whose research and teaching span languages, literatures, cultures, and linguistic interests from across the globe. The Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures strives to be an engaged community that encourages curiosity and intellectual adventure of the highest quality. We welcome all prospective and new students to our classes, and to Texas Tech University's community of students and scholars.

A few highlights from our Department:

  • CMLL is the recipient of the 2011 Texas Tech University Globalization Award in recognition of the department’s commitment to sending faculty and students abroad for research and study abroad programs.

  • The Spanish doctoral program is the highest ranking doctoral program in the College of Arts & Sciences, according to the 2009 Academic Analytics ratings.

  • CMLL has three Horn Professors: Dr. Hafid Gafaiti, Horn Professor of French, Dr. David Larmour, Horn Professor of Classics, and Dr. Janet Pérez, Horn Professor of Spanish.

  • CMLL has two endowed professorships, the Qualia Chair of Spanish, held by Dr. Janet Pérez, and the Qualia Professor of French, held by Dr. Hafid Gafaiti.

  • CMLL has many award-winning teachers in the department and the Department is proud of its tradition of excellence in teaching.

  • CMLL won the Departmental Teaching Award in 2008.

  • CMLL also maintains a commitment to excellence in research and scholarship. Faculty members have active research and publishing agendas and a number of journals are, or have recently been, edited out of the department.
