Writing and Technical Communication

Our degree program's broad approach will provide you with a solid foundation for a wide variety of professional and technical careers in writing. Our writing (and design) courses will enable you to compose and edit a wide range of document genres for business, industry, government, non-profits, and countless other professional organizations. We also teach students how the mediums that we write through impact content creation for different audiences, including those on social media and the internet.

Alongside these skills, all of our students gain practical experience in technical writing, such as instructional design, editing techniques, and proposal writing. Our degree is called the Bachelor of Arts in Writing, Design, and Technical Communication because “technical communication” is a very broad field of study. Technical communication includes any type of writing that 

• • communicates using a technology such as social media, web sites or mobile devices
  • communicates about any specialized topic from science and healthcare to business and information technology
  • provides audiences with effective instructions on how to accomplish specialized tasks or interact with digital platforms and systems (STC.org)

Consider these career examples that would be open to you as a graduate of our program:

• • You work for the Austin, TX-based international company, National Instruments, who produces automated testing equipment and hires technical writers and editors to draft proposals for competitive bids to secure state contracts. (By the way, National Instruments holds recruiting information sessions with us each semester and has hired our past BATC graduates).
  • You could be hired as a strategic writer for he home security company SimpliSafe where you communicate with development teams for technical project updates, and then draft clear and concise action plans and reports for upper management that translate complex technical details into company-impacting decisions.

Students get to practice writing (and designing) for these scenarios while taking our courses.
