CONG RECEIVES NSF AWARD
CONG RECEIVES NSF AWARD
Weilong (Ben) Cong (as PI) has received an NSF grant (#1712311) entitled “Collaborative research: Creating an Upper Division Additive Manufacturing Course and Laboratory For Enhancing Undergraduate Research and Innovation”. The goal of the project is to help engineering undergraduates as well as K-12 students learn about additive manufacturing so that they are better prepared for the renaissance in U.S. manufacturing. The research will be conducted through the development of intellectually rigorous course materials (e.g., textbook, lab manual, lecture notes) that will be publicly accessible via hard copy and a virtual classroom website; the conduct of important educational research on the impact of the new Additive Manufacturing curricula on changes in student attitudes and self-efficacy in STEM, the results of which will be published in engineering and education journals; and the development of simplified 3D printing projects for K-12 students and Maker Space users.

Dongping Du, Assistant Professor of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering, recently received $275,974 from the National Science Foundation for her project “Personalized Modeling, Monitoring, and Control for Advancing Ventricular Assist Device Therapy in End-stage Heart Failure”. This project is to develop a personalized risk stratification and treatment planning strategy, as well as an adaptive control system to improve the destination therapy for end-stage Heart Failure. The research outcomes can benefit the overall population of heart failure patients, and ultimately advance the health and quality of life of all society.

Weilong (Ben) Cong (as PI) has been awarded a Nano-mechanical testing system from the Department of Defense through award W911NF-17-1-0270. This testing system will generate new capabilities for measurements of compressive and tribological properties on superior performance (high load-bearing stability, excellent wear resistance, good friction behavior, outstanding adhesion performance, high hardness, or outstanding lubrication condition) nanostructured metal based materials (bulk parts and coatings) fabricated by laser additive manufacturing for both research and education purposes. The requested testing system will also promote current laser additive manufacturing research and enable new research areas.

NING RECOGNIZED AT NAMRC
NING RECOGNIZED AT NAMRC
Dr. Weilong Cong’s Ph.D. student, Fuda Ning, recently won the First Runner-up in 2017 NAMRI/SME Outstanding Student Research Presentation Competition at the 45th SME's North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) in Los Angeles. The award was announced during the annual reception and awards banquet to recognize student contributions to NAMRC. Fuda is the author and co-author of 20 published journal articles and 12 conference papers, which receives more than 220 citations (based on data from google scholar). Fuda was also the recipient of the Horn Professors Graduate Achievement Award at Texas Tech in 2016.

TIRAVENGADAM RECEIVES TEACHING AWARD
Congratulations to Naveen Tiravengadam. He has been selected for a 2017 Helen DeVitt Jones Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award. Naveen earned the award over several semesters teaching IE 2324, Engineering Economics. His diligent work helping with the testing and administration of the course coupled with his outstanding classroom presence made a significant impact on his students.

YARED RECEIVES SAFETY SCHOLARSHIP
YARED RECEIVES SAFETY SCHOLARSHIP
Tamer Yared has received the Texas Safety Foundation HSE Scholarship from the American Society of Safety Engineers Foundation. Each year the Foundation Scholarship and Grant Program receives hundreds of applications. Tamer has been selected for this award for demonstrating leadership, academic excellence, and great potential. Tamer holds the International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (NEBOSH) and the OSHA 30-hr Construction Safety and Health Training Certificate. Tamer's plans to conduct further Safety Engineering and Human Factors research working under Dr. Patrick Patterson.

TEXAS TECH IISE HOSTS REGIONAL CONFERENCE
TEXAS TECH IISE HOSTS REGIONAL CONFERENCE
The Texas Tech chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) perennially receives the Gold Chapter award for excellent chapters. This spring, Texas Tech IISE hosted the 2017 IISE South-Central Regional Conference and Paper Competition from March 2nd to March 4th in Lubbock, Texas.

Over 110 undergraduate attendees from 10 different IE programs across the region, including University of Oklahoma, University of Arkansas, Mizzou, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M, joined the Red Raiders from our department for a weekend of professional development and networking. The weekend consisted of plant tours to local companies, professional workshops led by alumni and faculty, and a technical paper competition. Overall, the conference was a big success, and left attendees with a great view of Texas Tech, and the IMSE department.
