Academic Counseling Philosophy

I believe the role of academic counseling is to guide students on their individual paths. I want all my students to become what they envision, but I also want them to see and believe the true potential of what is possible, which often changes drastically between that first day of freshmen classes and the day they walk across the graduation stage. To do this, I create an environment that is welcoming, safe, and facilitates open and gentle conversation about what students want to accomplish, barriers to achieving those goals, and resources – both personal and professional – to help them get there. My approach often involves highlighting “the road less traveled,” to quote Frost, or in other words, to be open to strategies or possibilities students haven't considered.
