Texas Tech University

Frequently Asked Questions

What courses do you need tutored?

We need tutors for all subjects and majors, but the specific need depends on the students enrolled in our program for the semester.

What happens after I turn in my application?

After we receive your application, you will be notified of the status of your application. If two weeks have passed and you have not received anything from us, please give us a call.

What can be expected of the interview process?

Interviews are given to candidates with strong applications, resumes, transcripts, and written communication skills and/or our need for specific courses for which we need tutors. If chosen for an interview, you will be contacted via email to set up an interview time.

If you aren't chosen for an interview, we can hold your application for future consideration.

Will I still be considered for the job it I have limited experience or knowledge of learning disabilities?

Yes. We require a two-day training at the beginning of each semester, as well as on going trainings throughout the semester, for all new tutors. We will go over specific topics and strategies for tutoring students that have been diagnosed with a learning disorder, ADHD, or Autism Spectrum disorder.

Who will I tutor? Will it be the same person all the time?

You will be working one-on-one with students that are accepted into the TECHniques program. At the beginning of the semester the TECHniques staff works to pair students with tutors, taking into account the personalities and academic programs of both the student and tutor. As a tutor, you will work with the same student(s) throughout the semester.

What do you mean by "flexible hours"?

We say that hours are flexible because you work with your students to set the times when you will meet. The number of students you work with is up to you, but is set once the semester starts.

I have over 40 hours, but they are not all from Tech. Can I still apply?

You bet!

What if I want to tutor a class that I have taken somewhere else?

As long as the course appears on your transfer transcript at Tech, you will be able to tutor that subject.

What if I want to tutor a class that I took a CLEP test for?

We can still use you to tutor that subject. However, for some subjects, in-class experience is better.

Where and when does tutoring take place?

Tutoring is expected to take place only in the TECHniques Center. The student's Academic Counselor may approve tutoring in the library for research purposes, science lab for science courses, or other places necessary for academic coursework. Tutoring must be conducted in a quiet, distraction-free environment. Tutoring may not be conducted in residence hall rooms, homes, apartments, coffee houses, etc.

I have applied to TECHniques before, but my services were not needed at the time. Can I tutor this semester and do I need to reapply?

We keep records of all our applicants for two semesters, so if you would like to be considered, just contact us and we will pull your file. (this also goes for tutors who have worked for us in the past).
