Undergraduate Admission Procedures

To apply to the School of Theatre & Dance, an applicant must:

First-Time Freshman:

  • Complete the School of Theatre & Dance application on Acceptd.
  • Apply to Texas Tech University on ApplyTexas.
  • Have an official high school transcript (showing GPA and class rank) and SAT or ACT scores sent directly to the Office of Admissions.

Transfer Students:

  • Complete the School of Theatre & Dance application on Acceptd.
  • Apply to Texas Tech University on ApplyTexas.
  • Provides official transcript(s) from all institutions in which they have been or are enrolled.
  • Must be eligible to return to the institution most recently attended.
  • Provide an official high school transcript.

Supplemental Application Requirements:

BA Dance: On-campus auditions held every fall and spring semester. For more information contact dance.info@ttu.edu.

BA Theatre Arts: Submit a resume with your Acceptd application.

BFA Theatre Arts:

Acting: On-campus auditions held every fall and spring semester. Pre-screen materials should be uploaded to the Acceptd application. Attendance at satellite auditions may replace the on-campus audition requirement.

Design/Technology: An interview with the Design faculty prior to or during the first year of study at Texas Tech.

Musical Theatre: On-campus auditions held every fall and spring semester. Pre-screen materials should be uploaded to the Acceptd application. Attendance at satellite auditions may replace the on-campus audition requirement.

Graduate Admission Information

The successful applicant to a master's program typically has a GPA of at least 3.0 in undergraduate work. The successful applicant to the doctoral program typically has a GPA of at least 3.4 in master's work. It is expected that a student entering a graduate program has successfully completed certain courses prior to their graduate work. The successful graduate student may be asked to level in courses they have not taken.

An interview may be scheduled after application and prior to admission.

Applicants will not be evaluated until all of the requirements below have been submitted in the application. The Graduate School will notify applicants when their applications are complete, have been referred to the School of Theatre and Dance for consideration, and when an admissions decision has been made.

To apply to the School of Theatre & Dance graduate program:

  • Apply to the Texas Tech Graduate School
      • Submit the application at least three months before the intended date of enrollment
      • Provide transcripts of all previous college-level study
      • Use this placeholder PDF file to upload to the Graduate School site when asked for CV, Personal Statement, Cover Letter, Writing Sample, etc.  Please note that you will upload transcripts to the Graduate School as well as to Acceptd.
  • Submit your supplemental application materials via Acceptd

Supplemental materials uploaded via Acceptd will include the following:

  • Official GRE score report, (not applicable to MFA-Design applicants)
  • A required application fee
  • 3 letters of recommendation, preferable from sources in the area of theatre 
  • Current resume
  • A writing sample (a minimum of 750 words), preferable about an aspect of theatre. PHD applicants:  submit 10-30 pages of your best research or academic writing.
  • Statement of purpose for graduate studies:
    •  Elaborate on your academic interests and goals specific to the program of study you wish to pursue.
    •  Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest in applying to this program. This might include your undergraduate studies, and any other graduate study or relevant professional work if applicable.
    •  Why does this program at Texas Tech interest you and how did you hear about it?
    •  How do you hope to utilize your degree after graduation?
    •  PhD Applicants: The Fine Arts Doctoral Program offers a unique interdisciplinary education in Art, Music, Theatre, and Philosophy, and provides a comprehensive approach to doctoral study of the arts and of aesthetic principles. Describe your interest in the interdisciplinary core of our doctoral program. See: Fine Arts Core
  • Applicants to M.F.A. programs must submit samples of artistic work in their area of interest. Only materials with return postage will be returned.
    • Performance & Pedagogy: An on-campus audition with faculty (preferred) or an online submission (Acceptd) of two contrasting audition pieces and a song (song is optional)
    • Playwriting: a ten-page sample of a representative work
    • Design: a portfolio of design work (slides, CD/DVD, websites, or photographs in portfolio format, not original renderings)
    • Arts Administration: an interview with faculty
    • PhD Applicants: indicate the two tracks they plan to pursue: Acting/Directing, Arts Administration, Design, History/Theory/Criticism, Playwriting
