Residence Halls

Due to the live-in nature of residence halls and dormitories, fire and life safety codes are typically more stringent than those applied to academic or administrative buildings. Because of this vital difference, some items or conduct permitted in academic or administrative buildings differ from those permitted in dormitories. For specific information regarding items and conduct permitted in residence halls, please review your housing agreement, visit University Student Housing’s website or contact our office.

Fire Sprinkler Systems

All residence halls at Texas Tech University are protected by automatic fire sprinkler systems. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, automatic fire sprinklers and smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than 82% and can reduce fire damage by up to 97%. According to research done by the NFPA between 2017 and 2021, fire spread was confined to the object or room of origin in 94% of all reported structure fires in which fire sprinkler systems were present.  sprinklerhead

Fire Alarm Systems

All residence halls have automatic fire alarm systems to alert residents should a fire occur. These systems typically consist of manual pull-stations located at exit doors, notification devices like speakers and strobes, and smoke detection devices in all areas of the building.

Emergency Lighting Systems

All residence halls are provided with emergency lighting systems, which activate if primary power is lost. There is emergency lighting in various places throughout the buildings such as exit corridors and stairwells.

Evacuation Drills

All residence halls have emergency evacuation plans and conduct periodic drills to ensure residents are familiar with evacuation procedures.

Fire Safety Guidelines

Fire safety guidelines are established for all residence halls. Examples include prohibitions on smoking, e-bikes and e-scooters, using candles and certain cooking appliances. You may view health, fire and safety guidelines for residence halls by reviewing your Housing Agreement or at University Student Housing’s website here.

Fire Safety Training

All residents are provided with information regarding fire safety guidelines with their Residence Hall Handbook. In addition, Community Advisors (CAs) receive special training in residence hall fire safety guidelines.

Fire Safety Management

TTUFMO conducts fire and life safety inspections of every residence hall at least twice a year. Safety hazards noted during these inspections are identified and corrected. Students who violate fire safety regulations receive additional safety training and may be subject to disciplinary action and/or criminal prosecution.
