Services
In an ongoing effort to make Texas Tech University a safer place, the Texas Tech University Fire Marshals Office performs the following primary functions:
Building Inspections
Our personnel conduct fire and life safety inspections of all new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with the currently adopted NFPA Fire & Life Safety Codes. When our staff members note deficiencies, we generate written reports and provide guidance in developing solutions that create compliance with code.
Construction Review
Our office conducts plans review for new construction and building renovation projects and works to ensure all projects comply with the currently adopted NFPA Fire & Life Safety Codes. We also conductperiodic construction site inspections during the building process and monitor acceptance testing of fire protection and life safety systems.
Complaint & Inquiry Response
Our office responds to complaints and inquiries from the university community regarding fire and life safety issues on a regular basis. Common complaints and inquiries include concerns about occupancy limits, electrical equipment usage, blocked exits, temporary decorative lighting, portable heaters and deficient fire or life safety equipment (such as empty or used fire extinguishers).
Incident Investigation
Every fire-related incident on campus requires response and investigation. TTUFMO responds to and investigates incidents to ensure the university community is not endangered. We conduct investigations to determine the nature, origin, and cause of each incident. Examples of incidents our staff investigate include fires and smoke on campus, fire alarm activations, odors of natural gas, and other hazardous material related incidents.
Special Event Supervision
Of the numerous special events on the university campus, many are large gatherings, and some involve the use of pyrotechnics and other potentially hazardous materials. Our personnel attend most of these functions to ensure basic fire prevention and life safety principles are followed. For example, we monitor conditions to ensure buildings are not overcrowded, exit doors are not obstructed and hazardous materials are handled in a safe manner.
