On January 22, 2025, members of the Center of Excellence in Capacity-building for Resilient Housing (CECREH) participated in the NHERI SimCenter Community Roundtable on Post-Disaster Housing and Household Recovery. The event, hosted by Dr. Rachel Davidson of the University of Delaware as part of the SimCenters Socio-Economic Impacts and Recovery Working Group, brought together social science researchers, modelers, and practitioners to discuss critical issues in post-disaster housing recovery.
CECREH Director Dr. Ali Nejat of Texas Tech University and Co-PI Dr. Elaina Sutley of the University of Kansas joined a panel of experts including Dr. Andrew Rumbach of the Urban Institute and the CECREH Advisory Board, and Demarcus Foster of Civic Heart. Together, the panelists shared insights on the challenges and opportunities shaping post-disaster recovery.
The roundtable emphasized how social, economic, and structural factors influence housing recovery timelines and shape opportunities for more equitable rebuilding.
The discussion explored interdependencies in the recovery process, potential interventions to strengthen post-disaster housing efforts, and strategies for scaling recovery support across local, state, and federal levels. These conversations align with CECREHs commitment to advancing research and policy solutions that support equitable, climate-resilient housing strategies.
