Grape Creek: Polygamy, Lawsuits and Murder

A splinter Mormon group, early land speculators, Captain Jack Hays, Native Americans, German settlers, the Civil War and a violent vigilante group all played parts in “Polygamy, Lawsuits and Murder.” The history of the Grape Creek community in Gillespie County (1836-1868) provides a fascinating lens to view early pioneers and Texas history.

Katherine Peake, while raising her family on Lower South Grape Creek, knew from rumors and graves that there was history there. Researching primary sources, she has followed many rabbit trails to track down the story. Katherine, an attorney, served as the Fredericksburg municipal judge for over 25 years and has been active in many community organizations.
