RRO Tips from the Think Tank

My name is Jon Kelly, from the mountains of Western Colorado.  I'm the proud father of a daughter who just wrapped up her freshman year, majoring in Economics. I attended Red Raider Orientation (RRO) with her last summer and both of us had an amazing time! We both found the experience incredibly valuable to get to know more about Tech, the campus layout, and also to meet so many wonderful members of the Red Raider family. My daughter enjoyed the experience so much, she is one of the student leaders in the program this summer, so hopefully you will see her there!

Here are a few quick things I'd like you to know about RRO:

• Some of the time is spent apart from your soon-to-be Red Raider, as some meetings are students-only and some are just for families and guests. 
• Take advantage of the time to meet other families and do a deep dive on all things Tech, especially if you're like me and aren't lucky enough to be an alum.
• The campus tours are amazing, but be forewarned, it can get really warm, so take some water with you! Don't pass up the opportunity to see what the campus is like, though. The tour guides share interesting facts and history along the way, and you can also tour the Library or take a bus tour of Lubbock.
• One of the best takeaways for me was really getting comfortable knowing my way around the campus.  I felt like a pro when I came back for Family Weekend.
• Make sure to take a lot of pictures with your future Red Raider to remember the weekend!

Me llamo Jon Kelly y soy de las montañas del oeste de Colorado.  Soy el orgulloso padre de una hija que acaba de terminar su primer año, especializándose en Economía. Asistí a la Red Raider Orientation (RRO) con ella el verano pasado y ambos lo pasamos muy bien. Ambos encontramos la experiencia increíblemente valiosa para conocer más sobre Tech, el diseño del campus, y también para conocer a tantos miembros maravillosos de la familia Red Raider. Mi hija disfrutó tanto de la experiencia que es una de las líderes estudiantiles del programa de este verano, ¡así que espero verla por allí!

• Aquí hay algunas cosas rápidas que me gustaría que supieras sobre RRO:
• Parte del tiempo lo pasas separado de tu futuro Red Raider, ya que algunas reuniones son sólo para estudiantes y otras son sólo para familias e invitados.
• Aprovecha el tiempo para conocer a otras familias y profundizar en todo lo relacionado con Tech, especialmente si eres como yo y no tienes la suerte de ser un antiguo alumno.
• Los recorridos por el campus son increíbles, pero ten en cuenta que puede hacer mucho calor, así que llévate agua. Pero no dejes pasar la oportunidad de ver cómo es el campus. Los guías comparten datos interesantes e historia a lo largo del recorrido, y también puedes visitar la Biblioteca o hacer un recorrido en autobús por Lubbock.
• Una de las mejores cosas que aprendí fue a conocer el campus.  Me sentí como una profesional cuando volví para el Family Weekend.
• Asegúrate de tomar muchas fotos con tu futuro Red Raider para recordar el fin de semana.
