Overview
The Biophysics program at Texas Tech University brings together physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and computational science to understand the physical principles that govern biological membranes. Research led by Drs. Juyang Huang and Dima Bolmatov centers on lipid membranes, cholesterol-dependent membrane organization, membrane proteins, and membrane electromechanics, combining complementary experimental and computational approaches. Our laboratories employ fluorescence microscopy, planar membrane and whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology, and advanced biophysical techniques, while leveraging world-class X-ray and neutron scattering facilities to probe membrane structure and dynamics across multiple spatial and temporal scales. These experimental capabilities are integrated with high-performance computing, supercomputing, molecular simulations, artificial intelligence, and multiscale modeling to advance fundamental membrane biophysics and accelerate discoveries relevant to neuroscience, human health, and bioinspired materials.
