Is Pre-Health a Major?
It's not uncommon for there to be some confusion about the many ways students can be pre-health, so let's try to clear that up a little, shall we? A "major" academic program that determines a set of specific requirements that, when completed, result in a particular degree. Most professional schools and programs, on the other hand, do not require any specific degree or major. Further, the required prerequisite coursework for most professional schools and programs don't result in any spoecific major, either. So, pre-health areas of study are unique academic programs that can be combined with any major. The first question pre-health students should answer is whether or not their professional schools of choice require completion of a degree prior to entry or not. And the answer to that question depends on which health professions disciplines you are interested in.
Do I have to Declare a Major?
In many cases, the answer is, "Not right away." Since the first question pre-health students should answer is whether or not their professional schools of choice require completion of a degree prior to entry or not, let's start there.
The 10 pre-health programs we primarily advise for can be grouped into three categories:

4+ disciplines, where a bachelor’s degree required prior to entry
- Pre-Medicine
- Pre-Physical Therapy
- Pre-Physician Assistant
- Pre-Occupational Therapy

3+ disciplines, where a bachelor’s degree is not always required but is recommended because most people admitted enter with a degree complete
- Pre-Pharmacy
- Pre-Dental
- Pre-Optometry

2+2 disciplines, where most people who enter do not complete a bachelor's degree first, but parallel plan majors are encouraged to be indentified
- Pre-Nursing
- Pre-Medical Laboratory Science
- Pre-Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences
Students who aren't sure about which major they would finish along the way to professional school (if they have to) are allowed to choose a pre-health designation for up to 45 semester credit hours. Students who enter a professional school application cycle in the term after reaching 45 semester hours will be allowed to remain in a pre-health designation while they await the results of that application cycle. Students who do not enter an application cycle or do not receive a Yes and wish to enroll in further coursework at Texas Tech University will be required to declare into a degree-granting major before registering for furture terms.
