Fighting the Pandemic: Producing Testing Supplies
October 6, 2020 | By: Jason Cannon
The demand for COVID-19 testing supplies led a researcher and his team to utilize their resources to help out clinics in need during the pandemic.
As COVID-19 continues to impact the world, Texas Tech faculty have been working hard
on various coronavirus relief efforts. This video is part of a series that shares
what researchers have been doing these past several months in the fight against the
pandemic.
While demand for COVID-19 testing increases, the necessary supplies can be in short
supply for tests that require processing in a lab. A typical test requires something
called viral transport media (VTM), which is a substance the patient-sample is placed
in so it doesn't get damaged in the transportation and testing process. While his
team continues their work on a vaccine, Dr. Harvinder Gill began utilizing his resources
to produce VTM to help reduce the shortage of this critical testing supply.
