The Targeted External Faculty Awards Program at Texas Tech University is part of an
initiative to increase recognition and support of our faculty and increase the national
and international visibility of Texas Tech University. We support successful applications
for targeted fellowships and awards recognized by the Center for Measuring University
Performance (CMUP), the American Association of Universities (AAU), and the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
Texas Tech maintains a list of Targeted External Awards categorized as Highly Prestigious
Awards and Prestigious Awards.
Prior to submitting any application for a targeted external award, a faculty member
must receive approval to apply for the award from the department chair, school director,
or area coordinator.

Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award
Agency: Lasker Foundation
Targeted Disciplines: Research contributing to the elimination of major causes of disability and death. Awards
will be offered in three categories: Basic Research, Clinical Research, and Public
Service.
Important Information: Self-nominations not accepted. Colleagues familiar with nominees' work complete nomination
form and solicit support letters.
American Academy of Nursing Fellow/Member
Agency: American Academy of Nursing
Targeted Disciplines: Nursing
Important Information: Applicants must be sponsored by two Academy Fellows. Application materials include
pre-application self-assessment worksheet, application form, CV, ANA membership verification,
Nursing Association membership verification document, and $350 application fee.
Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards: Medical Scientist

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards: Scientific Interface

Important Information: Online pre-proposal must include pre-proposal form, including list of top five publications
and an essay describing proposed work, that is signed by applicant and postdoctoral
mentor, and a confidential letter from postdoctoral mentor. Full proposals will be
by invitation.
Cottrell Scholar Awards
Agency: Research Corporation for Science Advancement
Targeted Disciplines: Astronomy, chemistry, or physics (early career)
Important Information: Early-career faculty who hold tenure-track appointments. Applicants may submit their
own materials. Online application must include research plan, educational plan, and
statement on how the applicant will become an outstanding teacher-scholar with strong
academic citizenship skills.
Getty Scholars in Residence

Targeted Disciplines: Arts, humanities or social sciences
Important Information: This award requires faculty developmental leave (FDL). Applications must include
the application form, project proposal, CV, and optional writing sample. Letters of
support are not required for this application.
Guggenheim Fellows

National Humanities Center Fellowship

National Medal of Arts

Important Information: Nominations are submitted to the National Council on the Arts (advisory committee
of the NEA) who submits its recommendations to the White House for the President of
the United States to award.
National Medal of Science

Important Information: Nominations for TTU will be made by the President. Application materials include nomination
form, three to five letters of support, and a list of no more than ten publications

references cited, biosketch, supplementary material including department support letter,

Pulitzer Prizes

Important Information: Procedures and deadlines vary with category. Nominating jurors are appointed by the
Pulitzer Prize Board, and submit three nominations each year.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows

Targeted Disciplines: Must have an advanced degree in medicine, nursing, public health, allied health professions,
biomedical sciences, dentistry, economics or other social sciences, health services
organization and administration, social and behavioral health, or health law. Areas
