Department of Professional Communication
Are you....Media-savvy? Collaborative? Communicative?
The Department of Professional Communication offers a 120-hour degree program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media & Professional Communication and a 120-hour degree program leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Media Strategies. The department and its degree programs serve students who are looking for a communication degree with a broad skill set. Graduates from the program will be trained to work as corporate and business communication entrepreneurs, specialists, and managers. They will be able to run their own communication businesses or manage an organization's communications need. Professional communication students' education will be marked by its breadth of study across communication departments, as opposed to depth within a single specialization.
Why Professional Communication?
Our Professional Communication department has two degrees--DMPC (Digital Media and Professional Communication) and MDST (Media Strategies).
Media Strategies (MDST) is designed to prepare you for two kinds of work:
(1) Entrepreneurial media consulting requires you to take courses broadly from various departments in the College of Media and Communication. The capstone (MCOM 4325) requires you to conduct a case study of an entrepreneurial media start-up, design a business plan for a start-up of your own, and produce a pitch. This focus prepares you to start your own media business.
(2) Jobs in business that require a variety of media tasks. To find jobs like this, you could search under the following frequently available job titles/listings (communications coordinator, communications specialist, corporate communication coordinator, corporate communications specialist, marketing communications specialist, marketing communication coordinator).
The Digital Media and Professional Communication (DMPC) is the College of Media and Communication's newest degree. It is designed to prepare you to serve in a variety of communication roles throughout an organization. What's especially strong about the major is that it allows you to focus on different aspects of communication that are taught throughout the College, and you can customize your courses to fit your particular interests and needs.
