Mhairi A. Sutherland, Ph.D.

Personal Information

Dr Mhairi Sutherland currently works at AgResearch Ltd on the Ruakura campus as a research scientist with a focus in animal behaviour and welfare. She completed her undergraduate and master degrees at Massey University in New Zealand and then completed a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. Dr. Sutherland has experience in studying the behavioural and physiological stress response in several species including pigs, sheep, and cattle. In particular, Dr. Sutherland has experience researching painful husbandry procedures, including castration, in pigs, sheep, and cattle has investigated potential practical methods of pain relief that can be conducted on animal farms.
