Most of our programs are designed to last 1 hour and 30 minutes, but some can be adjusted to fit your schedule- shorter time or longer time.  The following Programs will be available in a slightly modified version from the program presented at the International Cultural Center because of time and space limitations of the schools.

Africa and Its Art

Grades: 4th–12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)
Core Knowledge – 4th Grade


Sculpture, textiles, woodcarving, masks and body adornment all make up the artistic forms created in the five main regions of Africa. From the beaded belts of Cameroon to the decorated houses of the Ndebele people, the art of Africa is a blend of historical and contemporary styles that has influenced many modern styles of art around the world. Get out your artist box and explore the richness of the continent of Africa through its art while creating masks, necklaces, Gris Gris (good luck charms), Ndebele art and an Egyptian cartouche.

African Expedition: Animals, Peoples and Places of Africa

Grades: K-2nd

Hold on to your safari hat as we “jeep” through the jungles of Africa in search of wild beasts and other animals. Continue the journey in the “tour bus” across Africa to get a first-hand look at artifacts and peoples of this vast continent. So, get your binoculars ready and your bags packed for this exciting expedition where you will try on traditional African clothes, play authentic African instruments, participate in an African Folk Tale and design animal masks. But watch out! You might find the “King of the Beasts” on this expedition through Africa.

Amazing Water Puppets from Vietnam

Grades: K-5th(Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Immerse yourself in the age-old traditional art of Vietnamese water puppetry. Enjoy a front-row seat at the “Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre” in Hanoi, Vietnam (via video) to see the splendor of the water festivities of this Vietnamese folk art. This folk art derives from Vietnamese peasant’s rural culture and an agricultural civilization of rice planting. Continue this ancient tradition by creating a water puppet of your own while discovering more about the culture and history of Vietnam.

Australia: The Land Down Under

Grades:

Australia is an amazing land of enchanting scenery where some things are quite different from here in the USA! Travel to the land down under the equator with us, from the urban coastal cities full of rugby fanatics, across the untouched flat lands of the outback where the indigenous people tell dreaming stories. Inside this island continent are diverse ecosystems ranging from dry deserts to rainforests and it is bordered by world's largest coral reef system. K12 International Education Outreach will take your students on an Aboriginal walkabout through Australia. They will learn about: animals with pockets, amphibians that walk on water, what a jumbuck is and how a boomerang works! They will make a tucker bag; fill it up with Aussie language, history, and other enriching gear that will have your students begging to know more about this remarkable land.

Children of the Dragon – The People and Culture of China

Grades: 1st-5th, 6th-8th

Far away from our nation’s shore is a large and mighty country where the people are called “the children of the dragon.” Travel across the ocean on a slow boat to the largest populated country in the world- China. Experience a “virtual” walk across the Great Wall, a roam through the Heavenly Temple Gate, a stroll into Tiananmen Square and meander around the ancient buildings of the Forbidden City. This excursion allows the traveler to interact with the artifacts, clothes, games and crafts of China. Come away with a box full of maps, paper cuttings, crafts (souvenirs) to remind you of your tour of China.

China - The History and Art of Paper Cutting

Grades: 1st-5th

Snip! Snip! Watch your scissors become magical as they transform plain paper into a work of Chinese art. Since the Han Dynasty, the people of China have created intricate paper cuttings, which over the centuries have become a distinct art form. Create a work of art with paper as you discover how the history and culture of China has influenced paper cutting around the world.

Cinco de Mayo

Grades: K-12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Ole Mexicanos! Come celebrate the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862. Students will explore the history behind the May 5th victory called “Cinco de Mayo” and discover the origins of this Mexican holiday. The celebration will include art, crafts, games and music. Ole!!

A Cultural Journey through Vietnam

Grades: 3th-5th, 6th-12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Get your plane ticket, visa and passport ready and pack your bags to fly with us to the Southeast Asian country of Vietnam. Your journey starts in Hanoi, the capital city, and winds down through the countryside and cities until you reach Ho Chi Min and the Mekong Delta. This highly interactive program will bring to life the culture of this part of the world with maps, videos, pictures, artifacts, music, and games. The journey will end with students having a deeper understanding and appreciation for the fascinations of Vietnam.

Egyptian Adventure: From Hieroglyphics to Pharaohs

Grades: 1st-6th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)
Core Knowledge – 1st Grade


Get your passports ready for an adventure filled with the sights and sounds of Egyptian culture. This adventure will take you to the hot sands of Egypt where you will search for clues to solve the mysteries of this ancient culture. Become an “Egyptologist” and discover how the past will come alive as you participate in interactive, hands-on activities that will explore the geography, history, hieroglyphics, and the lives of Pharaohs.

Flags: Their Significance and Symbolism

Grades: 3rd-5th

The “History and Significance of Flags” presentation will introduce students to a brief history of flags throughout the world, as well as teach them about the traditional flag components and design and the significance of color and symbolism. Students will create a flag to represent a new country after group discussions to define their country’s form of government, geographic location, population, history, etc., to determine how those elements decide the design of their flag. After the flags are completed, students will showcase and explain their country’s new flag.

Friends, Romans, and Countrymen - Lend Me Your Ears!

Grades: K-3rd

All roads lead to Rome - so, we say, ���Let’s go!” This interactive, hands-on trip will take students on a virtual “roam” through the ruins of this boot-shaped country. Explore this ancient culture and unfold the mysteries of an unprecedented civilization though its literature and views of the breathtaking remains of Roman buildings and statues. Three stages of ancient Roman history will come to life as the students hear the stories about the old kings and the powerful emperors, how the Romans lived their everyday lives, and what parts of ancient Rome are still standing today. While on this journey, learn to speak a little Italiano, make dice with Roman numerals, and discover why people say, “All roads lead to Rome.” Arrivederci!

From Stones to the Euro: Money through the Ages

Grades: 3rd-5th, 6th-12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

"Show Me the Money!" Throughout the ages, people have had something of value that was exchanged for some needed or wanted item. Students will learn about the history of money from cowry shells and stones to the Euro currency. Students will examine how the European Union formed and what drove the union to develop the Euro currency. Students will look at color symbolism and elements of money design through the observation of real currency from around the world. By using the European Union as an example, students will focus on the United States, Canada and Mexico as trading partners and design a new currency that would facilitate trading between these 3 countries.

Grades: 3rd -5th, 6th - 8th, and 9th - 12th   (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservations)

Interactive Culture Baskets: Exploring the World’s Artifacts

Grades: K-6th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Students become “global archeologists” as they discover the contents of regional baskets on a fact-finding expedition. Students will travel through Mountain, Desert and Rainforest regions of the world and on to Asia, Africa, and Latin America as they study and look at the content of our culture baskets. This hands-on program offers a glimpse of the world through artifacts made from regional materials by the people and from materials of diverse regions around the world. Their search will lead to new discoveries about the peoples and cultures of the world.

Japanese Art of Paper Folding

Grades: 3rd-5th

The art of paper folding originated in China and traveled to the shores of Japan where it is called “origami” (pronounced or-i-GA-me). Origami in Japanese literally means to fold (oru) paper (kami). Learn how to fold paper to make animals, peace cranes and other objects while learning more about the culture of Japan and the very popular art of origami. Happy folding!

Japan, Land of the Rising Sun

Grades: 2nd-6th

Have your airline ticket, passport and luggage ready to board the plane for your journey to “Japan, Land of the Rising Sun.”  When you arrive on the beautiful island nation of Japan and get on the “tour bus,” you will experience the sights and sounds of this unique and culturally rich country through photographs, video, music and packing your backpack full of memories from your journey.

Journey to the Past: A Look at Native American Culture

Grades: K-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-7th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservations)

Take a journey to the past as we walk back through the trail of time to discover the rich history of Native Americans or “The People”. With specific research about the Plains Indians, we will make discoveries about the lifestyles of the indigenous peoples of North America. The past will come alive as you explore the artifacts, pictographs, petroglyphs, music and stories from various tribes. Along the trail you will be involved in creating a parflèche, re-enacting a Native American legend and making a traditional craft.

Mexico Celebrates Dia de los Muertos

Grades: 4th-12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday dating back to the Aztecs, is still celebrated in many parts of Mexico and is gaining popularity in the United States. Join La Catrina in celebrating this ancient holiday with its rituals and family traditions – travel with her to experience the history, preparation and symbolism associated with Dia de los Muertos. Create an ofrenda(offering), make a cempasuchil (marigold – flower of the dead), and decorate a azucar calaveras (sugar skull).

A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words: Communication through the Ages

Grades: K-5th

Throughout the world, in caves, on mountains and hills, in temples and pyramids, people told the history and stories of ancient civilizations through pictographs, petroglyphs and hieroglyphics. Archaeologists and anthropologists continue trying to decipher these complex graphs and glyphs. Cave paintings and rock drawings are found in countries throughout the world – so, bring your “decoder” gear on our pictorial journey to the past. As an archaeologist or an anthropologist, your decoder will assist you as you look at pictures of murals to reveal the artists' purpose for the painting and meaning. Your knowledge of what you have learned about drawings from the past will help you in your quest to draw your own story on a mural. At the conclusion of the program, students will try to “decode” one another's murals using what they learned during the program.

Snapshots of Asian Culture – A Glimpse of Asia

Grades: 3rd-5th, 6th-12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Get your cameras ready for “Kodak Moments” as you take a whirlwind tour of several major Asian countries. Experience the uniqueness of the Asian world. Artifacts from around Asia will highlight the similarities of the countries as well as distinguish the differences. You will capture the essence of this rich culture through videos, music, literature, games and culture kits. This highly hands-on program will provide images that you’ll want to put in you “Cultural Scrapbook.” (Different countries in Asia will be highlighted based on teacher request.)

Veteran’s Day Commemoration

All Ages

Join the nation in honoring all veterans of the United States of America who have bravely defended the United States of America and all the freedoms that we enjoy. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour (Nov. 11th at 11 a.m.) as Veterans Day to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. Every year the President of the United States urges all Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate public ceremonies. Participants will learn about the historical significance of this day through hands-on activities with the use of primary documents, visuals and music.

¡Viva Mexico!

Grades: 4th - 12th (Grade-level curriculum will be presented based on reservation)

Put on your green, white and red, Mexico’s National Colors, and celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, where, in the early hours of September 16, 1810, the bell of father Hidalgo's little church rang, calling everyone to fight for liberty. Learn about this historical holiday with hands-on activities such as; timelines, geography games, and cultural crafts. So, get ready to waive your flags and shake your maracas as we party in the plaza and decorate the streets to honor Mexico’s conquest for independence. “Viva Mexico!"
