Retail Management, the business side of fashion!

The Retail Management program at Texas Tech University provides you with the academic background and the necessary skills to prepare you for an exciting career in the dynamic, fast-paced technology driven retailing industry.

The curriculum emphasizes work-related experiences, internship opportunities and career placement. A 10-week, 300- to 400-hour supervised internship in the retail industry is required of each student with a retail management major. The supervised internship experience is planned jointly by the faculty and student. RTL 3389, Professional Practices in Retailing, is required during the spring semester prior to enrollment in RTL 3390, Internship in Retailing.

Fashion Camp
Texas Tech University hosts Fashion camp every summer.

June 22-26, 2015
Learn the "ins" and "outs" of the fashion world. Fashion Camp 2015 is designed for ages 8 to age 16.

Program Tracks

Two Tracks

The Retail Management program offers two tracks to meet the needs of Texas Tech Retail Management students and the retail community by focusing on the specific skills needed at the corporate level or as a store manager. Students may choose to a single track or complete both tracks.

Corporate/Research Track:
RTL 3380 Retail Buying and Control
RTL 4320 Retail Category Management
RTL 4330 Retailing Research

Store Management Track:
Students may choose three of the following courses:
RTL 3345 Event Management
RTL 3375 Retail Buying or RTL 3380 Retail Buying and Control
RTL 4340 Fashion Entrepreneurship: Retail Business Planning
RHIM 3320 Facilities Management
RHIM 4313 Legal Aspects of the Hospitality Industry
RHIM 3308 Hotel Group Sales and Services

Minor of Retailing:
Choose 18 hours (6 courses)
From the following choose 2 courses: RTL 1320, RTL 1340, RTL 2340, or RTL 2350
From the following choose 4 courses: RTL 3340, RTL 3345, RTL 3375, RTL 3380, RTL 3389, RTL 3390, RTL 4320, RTL 4330, RTL 4335, RTL 4340.
Interior Design students interested in a retail minor should take: RTL 1340, 2340, 2350, 3340, 4335, 3380, and 4320

Program Highlights

  • Sensing a Sale: How Retailers Use Pleasing Scents to Get You to Buy (WSFA – Montgomery, AL)
  • Fall 2014 TRA Fundraiser for Children’s Home of Lubbock collected:
    • Over 1000 pieces of gently used clothing
    • $900 in gift cards to Walmart, Target, Rue 21 and Old Navy
    • $144 from Raising Cane’s Fundraiser

  • Dallas Retail Field Trip
    The retail faculty took 19 retail management undergraduate and graduate students to Dallas January 28-30. They visited the corporate offices of JC Penney, Zale, and Fossil.
  • Mady Rengstorf, a retail management major at Texas Tech University, was selected as one of five national ambassadors for Cotton Incorporated. Cotton University is the leading textile resource for professionals ranging from manufacturers to merchandisers and everyone in between.
