The mission of the department is to provide the highest quality of industrial engineering and engineering management education by stimulating discovery, integration, application, and communication of knowledge.
Goals, Critical Success Factors, and Objectives
Goal 1. Academic and Research Excellence. Attain national and international recognition for academic and research programs at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels.
- Keep undergraduate and graduate programs current with developing technologies.
- Seek innovative methods to provide graduate programs on campus and off campus students.
- Recruit, hire, develop, and retain faculty with excellent teaching and research capabilities.
- Have academic and research focus areas with national recognition.
- Maintain adequate numbers of faculty who strive to provide excellent academic instruction and who perform high quality research.
Critical Success Factors for Goal 1
- Rank at least 3rd in our peer group.
- Thoroughly review and update academic programs on accreditation cycle.
- Move to 2:1 (2 three-hour courses and 1 three-hour course) course teaching loads for faculty active in funded research.
- Establish one center of excellence.
- Maintain at least one strategically hired faculty brought in at a senior level.
- Increase research expenditures to $200,000/FTE/year.
- Increase the number of publications in referred journals to two papers/FTE/year.
- Increase the number of professional society leadership positions held by department faculty to one position/FTE/year.
Goal 2. Access and Diversity. Maintain faculty and student diversity and increase student retention.
- Have faculty composition reflect student diversity.
- Increase scholarships and fellowships to attract more high quality students.
- Improve methods for recruiting students.
- Track retention rates for students and identify factors involved in student losses.

- Hire and retain female faculty at least in proportion to student gender proportions.
- Increase enrolled undergraduate students to at least 150.
- Increase enrolled graduate students to at least 75.
- Develop and distribute effective recruiting materials for undergraduate and graduate programs.

- Increase the “student friendly” attitude of department personnel; be rated as the most supportive department in the College of Engineering.
- Provide research and teaching assistants with adequate funding to attract high quality students; an average of $1200/month is desired.
- Increase undergraduate scholarship rate from 35% to 50%.
- Increase graduate students on assistantship to 67%.
- Increase graduate student scholarship rate to 67% for graduate students not employed on assistantships.
Goal 3. Partnerships. Build lasting partnerships to support department efforts in teaching, research, and service.
- Develop long-term relationships with industry to advance academic program development, research opportunities, and employment opportunities of our graduates.
- Provide institutional sources of students current information degree programs and career opportunities existing for industrial engineering graduates.
- Promote expansion of COE and department activities in the Amarillo area.
- Develop relationships with government labs and agencies.
- Expand interdisciplinary relationships within the university and TTHSC.

- Identify key suppliers of undergraduate and graduate students.
- Develop new degree program and career descriptive materials every two years.
- Average at least one per faculty working relationships with corporations and government labs and agencies.
- Develop and provide at least eight academic courses to support the COE objectives in the Amarillo area.

Goal 4. Resources and Infrastructure. Maintain quality personnel, facilities, and approaches to delivery of services.

- House Distance Education program within department.

- Build a new facility within 10 years.
- Increase the number of graduate courses offered through Distance Education to 10.

Goal 5. Development and Marketing. Enhance non-state funding for operations.
